Session 21 – All players present.

We went over questions from the last session before getting into the game. Reviewed extra attack advantage and its roll in dual wielding. Player that runs the Rager wanted to know if a new spell concept would be okay. Agreed to have him write it up using the magic rules and will decide on it when he is ready.

So they turn to speak to the girl. They all thought she was about 13/14 years old. Turns out she is older…just very short (4’5”). Her black hair is cut so raggedly that they are unable to tell her eye color. She is dressed in poorly cured hide armor and is carrying an unstrung long bow, arrows, dagger, and two combat axes all of which are crudely made. They all listen in as she is being questioned. She answers most questions with short answers. Knight picked up that her elven accent seems to be from southwest of the city.

She seems to be getting harassed by the watch so the Mystic walks over to reason w/the squad leader while Rager decides that he needs to talk to her now. He saunters (staggers) over and shoves one of the watchmen out of the way. Rager points to the man he shoved and says, “I got this” & then immediately asks the girl if she would like a drink. The watchman he shoved is an old acquaintance that accepts it gracefully while the watch leader is convinced by the Mystic that it’s all good (or that it might be considered harassment if they don’t lay off the half-elven girl). The watch leaves and the PCs start to question the girl.

She is quite reticent in the tavern but does part with her name: Searlean. Mystic is the only one who catches it but unfortunately doesn’t speak Elven. Rager asks her to repeat and she obliges slightly louder. She avoids most other questions. Rager finally asks what religion she follows and she stares at him. He then asked if she would feel better talking in his temple and she nods in agreement. They all leave but Mystic hangs back about a block from the group to keep an eye out for more trouble. Searlean seems to relax once they get away from the crowds and shortly starts to open up a little more. She pulls a leather necklace out from under her armor and on it hangs two medallions. Knight recognizes the first medallion as being dedicated to the Druids. Both paladins recognize the second one as a crude rendering of a worshiper’s amulet of The Battle Goddess. Rager asks wear she got it and she says she made it from a dream. He immediately states that they will talk no more until they arrive at the temple.

Meanwhile, Mystic hears footsteps following him. He casts ventriloquism to give warning to Knight and then ducks into a darkened doorway. After a few minutes, nothing happens so he moves out and catches up with the others.

At the Battle Goddess’s temple gates, Rager notices that of the five guards who should be on duty, only two are. He questions them and discovers that two are missing and the third is looking for the missing. He informs them that he maybe being followed and to call for him if any trouble occurs. He moves the group further in to a private room nearby. Mystic stands at the door and Knight stays in the hallway.

Searlean explains that she is the daughter of Sanoth (the druid from chapter 1) and that she has come to the city because she dreamed that the paladin order of the Battle Goddess was her calling. She hoped that the Rager she had heard so much about would sponsor her into the order. Rager agrees readily (he is still drunk after all). The initiation into the order is quite crude by most standards. He grabs to mugs of some unknown liquor and slams them down on a table. He then picks them up, knocks them together, and gives one to her. He slams back the drink while watching her. She readily knocks it back (though she does turn a little green). Mystic leaves in disgust and asks Knight if he can switch w/ him to hallway duty. Knight agrees. Knight makes his religion roll and realizes the drinking is normal for the Battle Goddess’s order. Rager throws the mug against a wall and she follows suit. He then declares the next step is combat. He gathers the group and takes them to a nearby practice yard. He looks at her axes and casually tosses them aside. He then gives her his own axes and takes a stance w/his great axe. They fight and during the 4th round, she goes down in a spray of blood. Knight (followed shortly by Rager) casts heal on her and bring her up back close to full.

During the final round of combat, Mystic sees a priest of the order walk by talking to a kitten. He alerts the Knight who steps over after healing Searlean (to be known as Scrub from now on in these logs) and they quietly converse. Rager and Scrub follow behind and Mystic lets him know what happened. The party quickly goes down the hall looking for the priest. They do not find him before hitting the restricted areas (restricted for the Knight & Mystic that is). They do find another paladin of the order and one of the berserkers. They didn’t notice anything unusual but one did see a priest walk by earlier. Rager describes the priest named to Mystic and it matches the kitten priest. Rager and Scrub go beyond the restricted zone and find the priest seemingly asleep in his bed w/ a kitten on his pillow. (Rager also noticed that the temple seems more empty than it should- even with the initiates out for the week war gaming in the plains). After several loud knocks, the priest sits up but seems very glazed. Rager questions him but gets very little coherent thought though the priest does say the kitten is an avatar of the Goddess (this could actually be considered blasphemy since the Goddess has always used a Raven for her animal avatar). He then appears to pass back out. Rager thinks about killing the priest for being bonkers and a blasphemer but sends Scrub to get the other brothers down the hall instead. She does and returns with the other Battle Goddess paladin (Slight hitch- she had to ask Knight to speak to them because neither of the other order members spoke Elven). Once there, the other paladin asks if he has tried to heal or restore the priest. Rager indicates he hasn’t so he casts Fortify Faith on the priest (which fortifies resilience). The priest seems to shake off the glaze and admits he had the strangest dream about a giant black panther who was debating something with him. He remembers nothing past going to bed earlier. Rager sends the other paladin off and retires for the night, sending Scrub to her new quarters.

Mystic & Knight wander over to Knight’s temple to rest. When they arrive, Knight realizes that something is amiss. Almost all of the people of the temple are still up and acting strangely. Some are talking quietly while others are doing strange things like trying to walk up walls. He reports to the head of his order only to find him in a deep trance. He casts rejuvenate (restores resilience) on his leader and shakes him out of the trance. Knight fills the leader in (noting the Battle Goddess temple happenings) and asks to declare an emergency. The chief agrees and tells him to send to the other temples to check on them. Knight agrees and sends runners on the way (those that he can find that seem to understand). He then goes to Mystic and suggests he get back to his order’s temple immediately to check on them. Mystic is half out the door already so he runs to the transit station nearby and shuttles to the district stop nearest his order’s house. When he arrives, he finds the two gate guards gambling on the steps. He quickly slams the board out of the way and demands they straighten up. They look dumbly at him and then start to clean up the coins and board. He storms inside to find many of the order doing very uncharacteristic things. He goes to the grandmaster’s quarters to warn him. He doesn’t respond. Mystic then attempts to break down the door but discovers that the internal defenses have been activated. He attempts to call through he door but knows that the internal defenses can include sounds dampeners for use against audible attacks.

Game ended here for the night. This was mostly a plot session hence the long write up. Can’t wait to see what the PCs will do about all this. All in all, was very happy w/ how quickly we all seem to be getting back into the system.
