It's both! It's really funny, complex, and a hell of a good read. It's more than just funny animals, there's a lot of adult (not just sex and violence but also dramatic themes that are part of the characters and plot) stuff for the grown ups, and fun, slap stick for the kids. I forgot how I found out about this but it is an underrated gem.

The art is fantastic too. If you like Jeff Smith and Bone or any lighthearted fantasy adventure story, you should be able to dig this.
