New to learning about Goodman Games/DCC/MCC in general

Post by AllenO »

I just wanted to drop a line to say hello. I just discovered this game this week, and have spent time reading the various articles on the main website. I'd heard of DCC before, but I figured it a "rules -lite" kind of game for some reason. I didn't realize until this week it is most certainly NOT. I tend to go for games like RuneQuest, Burning Wheel, GURPS and The Dark Eye over say, FATE. I also really enjoy the 70s-80s feel for the game and the modules. Brings back memories of playing Red Box D&D, AD&D 1st ed, Star Frontiers when I was a little dude with my cousins. I had a copy of Gamma World from 1978 with a couple of modules for it (Legion of Gold and Famine in Far-Go) but I don't know where it went, so MCC looks to be up my ally as well.

I downloaded the DCC QS pdf; what else should I get to get started? I asked this over in the DCC Lankhmar forum, but I'll ask this here as well: There are plans to reprint the DCC Lankhmar boxed, aren't there?

Anyway, hello, well met (or ill met, as the case may be). Hope my hello post isn't too long, so people don't read.

Mell wet!

There was a "beginners kit" available recently that was an amazing deal (softcover Rulebook, set of dice, adventure, and screen for $35), but it looks like it's not available right now. I know it'll be coming back, though...

If you can wait for that to return, I'd say the Quickstart can cover you for a couple levels, at least, right? Why not pick up a bunch of adventures for the lower levels and just dive into playing?

I'd also suggest scanning through the Third Party stuff, just to see if anything catches your eye -- the creativity of the fan community is rampant and amazing. The Gongfarmers Almanac is free in PDF and has TONS of stuff for the game... https://gongfarmersalmanac.com/

Oh, and the Events Page can help you find games to play in, if you're into that: https://goodman-games.com/events/month/

I agree with GnomeBoy. The quickstart is your friend. It has most of the key material you will want to know and will prep you for the real thing. :-)

It needs a hardcover book, now that the screen is thick.
