Re: Four fixes for DCC
I bet he'd cry like a girl if you attacked him with about 20 small and quick mindless undead with no eyes. What I'm saying is, I don't think it's unbalanced at all. Sure, I've done this many times, but after a dozen sessions of doing this it has become a farce: blind creatures have become a...

Re: Four fixes for DCC
Running, tinkering with and reading about DCC, I’ve encountered four problems. I’m offering my solutions to the first three – and asking for help with the fourth. 1. The balance is spotty in some places 2. Spellburn is overpowered 3. The game is not deadly enough 4. Ability drain is a nightmare to ...

Re: Death in DCC -- advice plea.
We've been using party rather than individual initiative for almost a year. Basically all the characters act in whatever order they want in three phases: pre-movement stuff (mainly spells or missile fire), movement, and post-movement stuff (spells or missile fire for characters who didn't cast or fi...

Re: Death in DCC -- advice plea.
I'd argue this is completely unlike 3.5/PF/4e because you have permanent stat loss each time. Heck, you lose a stamina point every time you GO DOWN, even if you're healed that round. (Make sure you're applying that rule, btw. It's a mean one, but I like it, and it makes combat suitably dang...

Re: Southeast Michigan - Players Wanted
I'm in Scio Township! Unfortunately my life and gaming schedules are packed full for the time being -- I already have two game nights a week plus a session with the kids every other week. (My adding another session would require a DC 20 wife-check and I only roll a 1d16 for those.) But I'll let you ...

Re: Wizard Power
I'm curious how folks deal with sneak attack. Can it be done over and over again in battle by hiding? I'm thinking it should only be usable by surprise? The rules are unclear IMHO. I allow thieves to attempt it during battle if they are in a flanking position or might plausibly be hidden from their...

Re: Wizard Power
The wizards in our campaign are really quite powerful in most situations compared to other characters. Part of the problem I'm seeing is that wizard spell bonuses increase much faster than monster saving throws, so that first level spells like "Color Spray" become almost impossible for mon...

Re: Ran my first session of DCC RPG this past weekend.
I let players recover 0 levels too. By the way there is no such thing as -2 HP in DCC RPG. Yep. It took my players a few sessions to get used to the idea that there are no negative HPs -- that all healing begins with 0. Maybe just because my group has four healers (two clerics and a paladin and a w...

The same wizard added "childhood memories of his patron (Marcus Tertius, who is a ghost) mingle confusedly with caster's childhood memories" in our session tonight. I may use this as a plot hook.

Re: Show me the money! Well show me the twisted Wizards!
The wizard in the campaign I'm running has recently reached fifth level. However his only corruptions are purple hair, bluish skin, and arms 6" longer than normal. He's never burned luck to avoid corruption. Next time they got to civilization I plan on making the purple hair and blue skin freak...

Re: Swimming
I require skill checks for swimming in still water on the presumption that characters are jumping in with their normal clothes and gear. Someone with swimming in his background in ideal conditions wouldn't need a check. I can swim, but I've been through training that involved jumping into water in s...

Re: How do you determine surprise?
If the party or the monsters are being ambushed, I use INT checks to see whether creatures/players can act during the ambush round. If it's a totally random encounter, and all other things being equal, I roll 1d6. On a 1 the monsters have a chance to ambush the party (as above); on a 6 the party has...

Re: Steading of the Hill Giant Chief, DCC-Style
I asked them when the session was over why they abandoned their plan to sneak around, and they started blaming each other (in a friendly way of course) -- so even they don't really know how the reckless front assault came about. We play DCC using MapTool (http://www.rptools.net) and Skype. The map i...

Steading of the Hill Giant Chief, DCC-Style
Over our last two gaming sessions I threw "Steading of the Hill Giant Chief" at the party in our mythic-Northumbrian campaign. They spent several hours scouting out the environs of the steading, over-heard giants talking about a "big feast" tonight with lots of drinking implied, ...

Re: Clerics and Deities in DCC
We play with one unique spell for each god at 1st and 3rd level of spells. I designed the spells in cooperation with the players after they chose their deities, so I didn't have to make a bunch of spells ahead of time. I also gave the clerics a minor permanent effect based on their deities -- 1 poin...

Re: Swimming
Our house rule is DC 5 strength check to swim up to half normal speed in calm water, adding the armor penalty to the check. For every 5 by which you beat this check, get 5' additional movement. In rough water, increase the DC to 10. If you miss the check by more than 5, you start drowning. We decide...

Re: Do we really need clerics and magic healing?
We've played our DCC mythic Northumbrian campaign through fifth level so far. The party has two clerics: a nun in an order devoted to St Oswald, and a pagan cleric devoted to the jötunn. The party also has my home-brewed paladin who gets to lay-on-hands each day until it fails. On the one hand, it d...

Re: Crawl! New Class Challenge: PALADIN!
We've play-tested my paladin through five levels now. I've bumped the hit dice down to 1d10 (the suggestion to do so was a good one!) and made the smite table more generous by +1. Also on a successful smite the paladin now gets +2 to his MDoA result (just for purposes of MDoA affects.) The couple ti...

Re: Alignment
In my latest two campaigns, law and chaos are about a character's attitude toward polity and civilization. A lawful character can oppose laws that are bad for civilization. Nice people might be chaotic if they are opposed to cities. Elves, in my campaigns, generally hate all cities, and so they are ...
