Re: Will we see the next updated draft?
Outstanding! This seals the deal for me. <heads over to the pre-order page...> What? You didn't do this months ago like the rest of us? Slacker! :P Nope. The whole "wizard magic is evil--all wizards are selfish--corruption happens even to neutral or good casters" thing really turned me of...

* Replace "as above" descriptions with more thorough explanations (i.e., each entry is self-contained so no need to skim above entries) * Including spell-specific misfires in each spell table * Including spell-specific corruption results in each spell table * Perhaps most importantly, lim...

Re: Party composition & different roles
Maybe have them roll up 3 sets of stats, and then let them choose the one they want to play. but then again, should the new PC be of the class the party is missing (eg: if a warrior dies, you need a warrior/dwarf, if a wizard dies you want another wizard/elf to take his place..)? I think that the f...

Re: no magic items--shouldn't those be playtested?
Low level success would only enchant an item of a period of time, and the nature of the enchantment would be somewaht random and unpredictible. I think that this presents a really interesting mechanic: Enchanting high-quality permanent magic items is hard, and using lower-quality items is dangerous...

Re: A couple of observations upon reading the beta...
To the point, I'm offended by this squirrelly gender-neutral language push the PC crowd wants. I didn't mean to offend anyone. All I am suggesting is that they might sell a few more books if they didn't exclude half of the population in their examples. It is a very tiny thing, but the example could...

A couple of observations upon reading the beta...
Just a couple of things I noticed: Where a human wizard may cast a spell to summon a demon a few times in his life, an elf may converse repeatedly with the same demon so many times over so many centuries that long-term arrangements become feasible. All elves have one or more extraplanar patrons who ...

Patron Taints for Haeviel the Seraphim (roll 1d6 very time a taint is aquired) 1. The wizard takes on an angelic appearance: his eyes become light blue, his hair becomes longer, beautifully curly and blonde. The second time this taint is aquired, everytime the wizard casts a spell he radiates a str...

Re: Types of magic in fantasy.
Here is my idea of the types of magic. The illustration is from today's episode of Prince Valiant. Note the equally powerful "good" magic coming from the group on the right (and btw, they are not "clerics"!).

I'd go for that if the "cleric" was a wizard with a nice patron (and dump the Cleric class altogether).jmucchiello wrote:I'd still prefer that the "cleric" was the white-magic side and deities were the Nice Patrons.

Re: Types of magic in fantasy.
The price may be related to the possibility of magic being too powerful to contain or of changing the nature of the spellcaster in ways that reflect the "good" higher realms but are as equally troublesome as corruption. Like your eyes now shine with continual light, your skins burns every...

Urts Lashing Tentacles 1: Spell lost, failure and Mishap roll (see chart) 2: Spell lost, failure and Mishap roll (+3 to results) 3: Spell lost, failure and Mishap roll (+10 to results) 4-10: Spell lost and failure. 11: Failure 12-13: Success ... Re: "Limiting" Corruption
You guys have a lot of great ideas in this thread. I think some version of the "modified corruption concept" will definitely make it into the final rules. YAY!!! :D :D :D :D :D The idea of spell-specific misfire results is growing on me. I think it can be done without too much added diffi...

Re: Higher Level Spells for BETA
Why not make the cleric a subtype of the wizard? Gods are easily thought of as patrons. Have spells for healing and turning unholy. And have patron-specific taints for spell failure.

As do I. I do like the idea of danger associated with spellcasting, but not the permanent, evil-type of corruption for EVERY caster.bholmes4 wrote:I really, really, hope this is addressed in the final rules.

Re: "Limiting" Corruption
Then the easiest solution is to use taints as corruption and having some fizzle results for example : Magic Missile lvl 1 1 Spell lost. Roll on patron taints table 2-3 Backfire 1d6 dmg.Spell lost. 4-7 Spell lost. 8-11 backfire: you take 1d6 magical damage as the spell goes off as per result 12-13. ...

Re: "Limiting" Corruption
I mean, if you're worried about a wizard player quitting because you're just roleplaying lots of people hunting him down as an aberration (something like Dragon Age: Origins), and he doesn't want to bear the consequences of his reckless abuse of magic, you're better off without him. I'm more worrie...

Re: No Skill Chapter
Each of these orders of magnitude is, IMO, best modeled by mapping to the standard deviation of whatever dice mechanic you use. Standard Deviation for d20 is 6 (5.91). So, using a very simple progression DC 11 is Untrained, DC 17 is Trained, DC 23 is Expert, and DC 29 is Master. Interesting post, b...

Re: Dumb idea: Two types of arcane magic
As pointed out before, without the corruption system the entire Wizard spell casting mechanic comes apart at the wheels. That is the only thing from keeping a Wizard from being a spell casting machine. Not necessarily. You could have consequences written into each spell description. Instead of just...

Re: Dumb idea: Two types of arcane magic
What if there are fundamentally two main types of arcane magic. (By "arcane" I mean wizard magic; toss out clerics entirely from the discussion.) One type would be low-level but pretty safe, the other would be high-level and pretty dangerous. Interesting idea. It seems to me that effects ...

Or...what if the DCC had generic stats ("Orc, 6 hp, axe, chainmail")...and ALL detailed stats were available as a download? So if you play 4E you download the 4E stats PDF...if you play Pathfinder you download the Pathfinder stats PDF...etc. This would be great! Kind of like the old Judge...
