Re: Handling skill check

Huh. That's a major mindswitch from today's games. Do you think it may put off newbies, especially those use to post AD&D systems? I ran into this at a con playtest. A boy had trouble thinking past, "I make a Search check." But I asked him to describe how he was searching and he caugh...

I can imagine. Have to hire more folks at least, and update the online systems to support the increased load.

*Chuckle*. I'm amused how, these days, DJs say Madonna's 80's stuff to be "classic".

Re: Handling skill check

For some activities, role-playing substitutes for a skill check. For example, we've all spent years searching for secret doors by rolling a Search check. But -- and I thank Tavis Allison for pointing out this out in a very good, concrete example at a GaryCon playtest last year -- you can also have ...

Re: Supporting multiple systems within the DCC's

Here's something I've been thinking about. What if a DCC were written in "native 4E" but there were downloads to support other systems? Or...what if the DCC had generic stats ("Orc, 6 hp, axe, chainmail")...and ALL detailed stats were available as a download? So if you play 4E y...

Handling skill check

How are skill checks handled in the DCC RPG? If I remember correctly from that one playtest in Anaheim, CA, certain classes have skills (e.g., thieves/rogues) as part of their abilities while most don't. I do vaguely remember making some sorta skill check where Joseph would give a DC and we'd have t...

I participated in one playtest and already heart the rpg. The above write-up -- and the fact that min-maxers are gonna hate the game (good riddance) -- just gave me a nerdgasm. 8)

Re: Beyond DCC RPG....

So, I'm definitely open to suggestions at the moment. :) My take? Focus on whole new mods for the DCC RPG like you did with your 4e line. Backwards-compatibility to 3.x is The Pathfinder Roleplaying Game's shickt. Fans of the DCC RPG will, soon enough, post guidelines on converting prior 3.x DCC mo...

Beyond DCC RPG....

I know it's early, Joseph, but any thoughts of support products for the DCC RPG? Example: Will it be set in Aerth? Or a new world entirely?

Re: Thoughts on a simplified SRD game.

For example, if one goes with a unified XP table for all classes, when a character levels up perhaps the player could select a new class from any of the four. Yes...if one does that. :) In my mind, the single most important defining difference between game design in 1974 and game design now is the ...

Re: Curious about the DCC RPG packaging

But I like magic to be MAGICAL. So in addition to the randomized table for each spell, every wizard has unique traits associated with their own casting of a spell. Without getting into too much detail, this is where one mage can be inherently more powerful at casting magic missile than another. Bot...

Read the former (in its entirety), not the latter. I'll have to check it out.

Re: Curious about the DCC RPG packaging

The basic format for DCC RPG will be a hardback book. I'm in talks with suppliers to also provide a dice set as a separate product. Based on feedback in this thread and other places, I will also investigate releasing some sort of limited-edition boxed set for those who are interested. Any hints on ...

Re: Curious about the DCC RPG packaging

I'm sure this is waaaaay early to know for sure, but I'm curious as to how much thought has been put into the way the DCC RPG will be packaged. Thoughts so far, questions, and a wishlist for the game: I assume a boxed set. My guess is that the rulebook will be a standard 8.5x11" size, but it w...

Re: Upcoming playtests of DCC RPG

The RPG club I organize, Dead Gamers Society and our local gamestore, DiceHouse Games in Fullerton hosted Joe's DCC playtest in October. For many of the playtesters, it was a introduction to "old school" style of roleplaying. It was a good time and I'm looking forward to seeing the final ...
