Re: Free RPG Day - First Playtest Adventure
1. Do helmets offer any sort of protection at 0-level play or beyond? AC bonus or defense against certain critical hit rolls? For helmets I offer conditional AC that protects the wearer from some types of critical hits. Depending on its type & construction, it might also make some "called ...

Free RPG day Demo, Portland OR
OK… so now that my schedule has slowed down, maybe I can get this game report filed :D Players: 5 total strangers (male) from teenager to grizzled gray hair, each with 4 suitably random peasants. Out of the 20: there were 3 Halflings (the highest luck among them was 8 ); 3 Dwarves (1 of which had th...

Re: Monsters
I think XP, how quickly it's given out in a "standard" game, how quickly players level, how the different xp requirements for each class affect the game, how the game plays at different levels with characters who started at 0 versus characters who started at 5, etc. IS a concern for playt...

Re: 0 lvl to lvl 1 Transition/Options - Thoughts?
Well, the advantage of race=class is that it's not as easy to max out characters. How many times have you seen players who want to be an elf just because elves have cool stuff they can do, instead of simply wanting to be an elf because they like them. I look at my 4E campaign and see Elderan, Drago...

Re: Warrior Mighty Deed of Arms
I like the MDoA premise, but how do we handle mighty deeds that don't require an attack roll? Like Fafhrds' rocket assisted leap over Trollstep canyon. Whats the AC of a crazy-a$$ stunt, or is stuff like that not considered mighty and therefore covered by skill check DC 20+?

Re: 0 lvl to lvl 1 Transition/Options - Thoughts?
Humans have to be humans, and they may pick from the four main classes (fighter, thief, cleric, wizard). Non-humans are encouraged to progress in their racial class, but are allowed the option of picking a human class instead. You really can have a halfling wizard, but then the character gains all ...

Re: Typos and such
I think this falls into the category of "& such." The spell duel section makes reference to "spell loss", but we aren't told what that is until 10 pages later. As a point of logic, I think the section on spell duels should be in the magic section, placed after the mercurial m...

Re: Dice...
For the record: I'm not hostile to the new dice {sorry if it sounded that way} I was a little irritated that I'd have to use cumbersome dice formula, or expensive, quirky, hard to find dice. I wasn't going to invest in them unless I knew I was going to get a table on Sat. Well, I got the table. And ...

Re: A lot of tables
My love of tables, second only to my ardor for tab-indexing.... My regular players won't be phased to see me flipping through tables... I have a full set of ICE fumble and critical strike charts. They learned to fear tables long ago... Personally I think the fumble chart isn't nasty enough...

Re: Level Cap
So which Appendix N character do you think is 10th Level ? Balor/Balrog scares off a Goblin army... Gandalf fights Balor/Balrog all by himself... after falling to the bottom of the world... The victory costs Gandalf his life though. {Ea} boots Gandalf out of heaven so he can finish what he started ...

Re: Level Cap
Maybe this is the right spot for this question... because answering it may help with the level cap issue: and because I know I'm going to get asked. [if no, then sorry. please move to where it should be :) ] "Can characters choose multiple classes?" Assuming that they were fortunate enough...

Re: Two weapon fighting and critical hits
Um, I'm not a statistician, but your solution still involves rolling 2 dice. Doesn't that render the "Statistical Skew" argument moot? I'd like to get together with you and play a little game called Craps. I'm not ADDING the results of two dice together. You are. That is the difference. S...

Re: Dice...
I love the mechanics of the new system. Including how the Zocchi dice are used and I am impressed by the "pioneer" spirit of GG for using them, but the cost argument [& from what I'm reading, their quality of craftsmanship] is pernicious. I like the idea that I'm not going to have to p...

Re: Two weapon fighting and critical hits
Using two dice as you are completely alters the probabilities. If you are going to use two dice, use them in d% form: d30 = d10 plus (d6 -- 1-2: +0, 3-4: +10, 5-6: +20). Um, I'm not a statistician, but your solution still involves rolling 2 dice. Doesn't that render the "Statistical Skew"...

Re: Two weapon fighting and critical hits
Frankly I'm not 100% satisfied with the two-weapon fighting rules as written. I really like the use of Zocchi dice...that part works out great. I'm not totally satisfied with the scaling of crit possibilities. It still feels, well, awkward -- not intuitive or easy to remember. I'm open to elegant s...

Re: Mighty Deeds of Arms Question
I disagree with that statement. Picking locks and casting spells are class abilities. Doing cool things is not limited to fighters and dwarves. Doing cool things WITH an attack is what defines and MDoA. They can accomplish a lot and have the best roll to do so and get to do it while making a damagi...

Re: Warrior Mighty Deed of Arms
For the record: I haven't played this yet, but I've been studying hard so as to run a beta test on Free RPG day. I've had 27 years of gaming experience, mostly as the DM, and I think the MDoA system is outstanding! I must confess to a bit of trepidation because if left as is I think it could become ...
