Re: Skill checks involving multiple characters
I have my players declare whether or not they are in primary or support roles. The one who is primary rolls a d20 normally. Anyone in a support rolls 1d20 and their result determines how much help they provide as follows: 1: -2 to check 5: +1 to check 10 +2 to check 15: +3 to check 20: +4 to check

Re: Book of Mysteries poll
I would be interested. I love all the home brewin I get to do for this game, but magic, in my opinion, is the most intensive stuff to do, so having a reference guide from which to draw I spiration would be great.
I foresee another DCC Kickstarter in the future.

Re: Wizards who never cast spells
It does not say, "Track your luck modifier if the score changes." I understand you could arrive at that through some implications, but you are wrong to think that it says that. Those words are not there. Besides, I thought the point of this topic was to offer solutions. That was my version.

Re: Wizards who never cast spells
It doesn't actually say that you're supposed to track the luck modifier on page 19.
But you're right, these games are all meant to be played rules-as-written, no houserules ever.

Re: Wizards who never cast spells
I think the issue is that you're tracking modifiers for spellburn. It's too much work, and leads to the kind of situation you're in now. It's much easier, in my opinion, to just add/subtract those rolls yourself. I don't bother with this most of the time, until we get down into 3-5 range. Otherwise,...

That thing was awesome. She found it eventually and destroyed it as a work of evil.
Luckily my parents didn't care, and bought me M:TG cards when I was in like 2nd grade.

Re: Race separate from Class
My most recent blog post is about this topic. I too wrinkled my nose at the concept of race as class when I first saw DCC RPG. After playing it, I realized this implication is a mainstay of pulp fantasy, whereas other games that allow any mixture is high fantasy. In high fantasy, the racial archetyp...

You should all be reading Hellboy, too. If you haven't looked into it and only saw the movies, forget everything you know. This is definitely Appendix N stuff, and Mike Mignola draws on a huge range of people for inspiration.

I don't do this. I award XP at the end of a session/quest. I mean, how many encounters do you have in a typical session? I'm running 4-6, which is really easy to keep track of.

Orc Stain, while not Appendix N, will probably tickle your fancy if you're looking for pulp stories. I will warn you though, there are some gruesome scenes throughout.

Re: Appendix N type movies.
I was realizing this while reading Swords Against Death , but there has never really been a solid fantasy movie in the spirit of appendix N. Someone mentioned that it doesn't allow for heroes, but I don't think that explains it. I mean, we have plenty of movies with no clear heroes. I just think fan...

Re: What do you use for a campaign?
I started both of my current campaigns with a homebrew adventure. In one, I didn't plan on continuing it beyond the scope of the adventure, but the players were really into it so I agreed. Now I'm just kind of making it up as I go along. It's been fun, and a real challenge, to figure out the shape o...

Re: Wizards, Known Spells, & Spellbooks
A simple way of allowing players some tailor their spells as they see fit is allow them to swap some out each time they level up. For example, if they find a scroll and, rather than cast it, they want to learn it, they could study it and upon leveling up unlearn an old spell and let this one take it...
