Re: Brave Halfling Publishing: Appendix N Adventures
John is not on top of the situation though. Nothing has shipped yet. I've no experience with him or his company apart from this Kickstarter. So far I've been disappointed by the lack of product. I hope he gets on top of things soon. I don't think he's being ill treated when consumers express their ...

Re: Brave Halfling Publishing: Appendix N Adventures
I don't mind getting e-flogged for saying so, but we should be expressing our happiness that John is able to keep us up to date on the progress of this whole thing and give us insight into the precise causes of the delays we consumers are facing. He could be saying "it'll be done when it's done...

Re: Hex Crawl Classics
I don't think DCC characters level up nearly as fast as AD&D characters do. Getting 1,500 to 2,500 XP when you get a small amount from monsters, but the bulk at a 1 to 1 rate for every gold piece worth of treasure you recover... every adventure I've ever seen for AD&D basically set you on ne...

Re: Expertise Dice
The version of it that I read was not much like the Deed die, mainly because you would "spend" your expertise dice instead of just needing to roll a certain number on its face to accomplish something other than "smash my foe until it dies." I will admit, I did not read much beyon...

Re: Half-Levels
Questions: If a character decides to multi-class in this system are they limited to the half-level dip, or is this just a stepping stone before they are able to take level 1 in the 2nd class? When does the decision to take a half-level occur? Is it deciding to be 1/2 Warrior and 1/2 Wizard upon reac...

Re: Two Weapon Fighting and Deed Die
I have begun to think that this particular bit of text says "deed die" but actually is meant to say "action die." That small change makes the text perfectly clear, as the accompanying table shows the differences in action die - and it also prevents the text from disagreeing with ...

Thanks for the link GnomeBoy... though I think I need to set up some better mental defenses because that blog post is hauntingly similar to my own thoughts on adventure design.

Hey smathis, you got a link to that blog? I don't google blog drops. cjoepar... Dropping hints for how to get an advantage in a battle
Ended a session, the third to be exact, of my "Temple, Giants, and the Demon-spider Queen," (a DCC re-envisioned combination of Temple of Elemental Evil, Scourge of the Slavelords, and Queen of Spiders) campaign just a few hours ago... and I came to the realization that my players didn't s...

Re: A question about XP
Has anyone had much experience with how quickly, like how many adventures it takes to level up in DCC? I know the funnel is after one adventure, I mean after this. I thought advancement in 3.x was too fast, for example. By the numbers using "average encounters" we can see that 3.x took 13...

Re: A question about XP
XP: Yes, I hand out XP in that exact fashion, with Encounter being defined as anything that happens in which the characters can show their character, the players can think things out to find a solution, and genuine risk is involved. Combat, dangerous terrain, traps, and even tricky negotiations all ...

<snip> You might like this for your game, but I don't know if it wouldn't be too much sugar for mine. I know what you mean. I do the same thing, to a lesser extent - but not between 0-level and 1st level. I have months or years pass between each adventure so that the campaign doesn't end up being "remember that one month when we [insert giant list of extremely disparate activities that culminated in some grand effec...

Bounded Accuracy, of a sort
I never really thought it needed a name, but the D&D Next playtest gave me one to use for it, so I am going with that: Bounded accuracy. Basically, for those not aware of the meaning, it is a system in which there is a maximum possible to-hit and a related maximum possible AC - my favorite examp...

Re: Read magic required for learning new spells?
The read magic spell in DCC is for reading magically created writings (scrolls), magical alphabets (such as the runes created by the runic alphabet spells), and at high levels of potency also allows reading of mundane language. It is not at all required to learn new spells though - there is a table ...

Re: 0 Level Action Die
The rule being mentioned there is the -1 die size for wielding a weapon you are not proficient with (better known as the "welcome to 0-level, you roll a d16 for all of your attacks" rule). Use of which resulted in a lot (more) 0-level characters dropping dead per 0-level encounter... turni...

Re: How do you define min/max?
I, for one, am happy that WotC is getting off that treadmill. Me too, not that I even ever use random encounters (I use planned encounters that occur "randomly" to the character's perception instead). In AD&D, DCC, or any of the OSR clone-games I've tried out, my play group can sit do...

Re: How do you define min/max?
I perceive a very different approach to balance from the 3e -> 3.5e -> 4e vector. YMMV. I think it all comes down to how detailed the advice on encounter building is - 3rd edition era games listed encounter difficult tables (ranging from Easy = CR less than party level to Overpowering = CR 5+ highe...

wait -- are we agreeing that the balanced encounters thing is a cliched, false criticism? It's totally bogus. All it took was to hear a player genuinely say "no guys, it's okay... that red dragon is an illusion. It has to be because we aren't high enough level to fight a dragon that big,"...

I don't think that Monte's to blame. When I am not all riled up beyond the point of being reasonable, neither do I, which is why I used the term "scape goat." 3rd edition D&D was a point in the life of D&D where a lot of changes were made that just blew my mind - though listing th...
