Re: Identifying magic item properties
Raskal, the old school reason for "research" as an answer is to separate the PCs from their gold. You can just put the ring on. Given that 10% of magic items were outright cursed in older versions of D&D this was not really the right idea. The other choice was to spend 8 hours casting ...

Re: Spell Formatting
It's been a long time since I've done this....
+d30.
I'd amend the idea by saying, give the player the spell with a 12+ result as the only listed result. When they get a 15 would be when you say such a result is even possible. Why should the player know if 14 might be different from 15 or 12 or not?

Re: How about some alternate classes
Would the character or player have to do the dance steps? I generally don't ask the fighters to swing swords about my living room nor demand that wizards properly incant their spells while making the proper intricate finger and arm gestures and I don't think I've ever tossed a lock at the thief and...

So i can move+draw a weapon and attack in the same turn ?

Re: Actions : others activities
The rule says that "Draw or sheathe a weapon", "Equip or drop a shield", "Open a door" actions can be included as part of a movement action. But i do not understand how it's works ? Example: If you are moving, you can draw a weapon while doing so. Thanks. But this coun...

Don't forget rules for failing saving throws against fire when you are carrying black powder. Black powder and fire breathing dragons mix even worse than guns and alcohol.

Re: Spell Formatting
Somewhere I posted my regret that we talked Joseph into making the game 10 levels instead of 5. The added space for spells needing 5 levels instead of 3 probably contributed to the need to tighten up the spell formatting. Ironically, I was also against the single spell per page idea and now kind of ...

Re: How about some alternate classes
Have not seen either bender of air but the dance idea has been kicking around in my head for 10 years or so. I'm sure there's a poorly written doc on my hard drive with the basics laid out in 3.0e terminology. Perhaps it would be less cumbersome without conforming to 3e....

Re: How about some alternate classes
Someday I will write my Gnome "Illusionist" class. It would be non-patron magic. Oh and my gnomes are "tiny", less than 2 feet tall with long beards. Tend to wear floppy hats and hide in gardens. Bards with "music" magic, also without patrons could be cool. I've always ...

Re: Unarmored Warriors
I've only ever seen the armor vs agility argument take the agility side when magic was sufficiently available to make an armorless fighter possible. Rings of protection on a fighter were not unusual in our games that were not uptight about magic items. It's just a play style that is not very Appendi...

Re: Classic Modules
While I have no problem with level limits and different XP thresholds (especially the latter), I think the reason people like them has more to do with nostalgia. I'm of two minds about this. Differing level thresholds means you can put a "powerful" class ability on one class at level 3 as...

Re: Books that should be in Appendix N
I recently read one his books (outside of the trilogy) - The Heroes. It was very good. Refreshing to read a semi-fantasy book that didn't require a multi-1000 page-book series to support it. Actually, it was about one battle in one town over three or four days. I would love to see authors develop w...

Re: Appendix N type movies.
I think it's fascinating that there are so relatively few "proper" swords & sorcery films and we have to quickly venture out into movies with the correct feel but different settings. This is because it is a style of story that isn't conducive to modern movie making. The boy is general...

Re: Books that should be in Appendix N
I would not add CS Lewis to the list because they are contemporary with other books Gary did include but for some reason he did not include them. How about modern Strange Fiction: China Mieville's Perdido Street Station, for example? Strange Fiction attempts to recall the works of Lovecraft with a m...

I wouldn't call this Older School. I would call it annoying. I prefer less detail in my gaming. We aren't playing Bugbears and Barter. I hate, hate, hate keeping track of money as a player. We go into town, stay for a few days, I mark off 3 gold and call it good enough. The reason is that causes cla...

Re: Classic Modules
Depends on how big your Giants are. If you make them REALLY big, a 0-level party with just a little stealth can fly under the giants radar. Some well placed ranged attacks could start the giant brawling one-another. (Just don't let one fall on you.)

Maybe? I've never played past AD&D. Is that how they do it in 3.5? Swarms are just a monster type, immune to non-magic weapons for the most part. Threatened by fire. They take up X number of 5 foot squares and are basically dispersed instead of being killed. Basically, instead of statting up a ...

Re: What adventures will be available when core book release
This is awesome, though some small part of me is sad at how huge the base game book is. Sounds like a heavy book to carry around, especially if you aren't a spellcaster.
