Re: Four fixes for DCC
First off, thanks for responding, and thanks for not assuming that I am trying to say you are doing it wrong. Considering issues, and throwing out ideas/opinions is like throwing spaghetti at a wall. Throw enough, and something might stick/be useful! I think we're all about the same age +/- 5 years...

Re: The Revelation of Mulmo PBP - WARNING SPOILERS
"Elves," Hamun Ry says, scowling. "They are not to be trusted. They'd probably just as soon eat us as talk with us. And we're likely trespassing in this sacred place. Keep your blades at the ready."
There's a south exit here? What's beyond the doorway/archway/whatever?

Once you wade through that, I guess we're just waiting for Fritz to reconnect with the rest of the party.

Re: The Revelation of Mulmo PBP - WARNING SPOILERS
Does it look like something's been tearing through here, searching? Hamun Ry is looking at the old blood stains suspiciously... wondering if they're evidence of some deathtrap. For example, spears shooting out of the walls (where the missing bricks are?) or ceiling, or floor, etc.

Re: The Revelation of Mulmo PBP - WARNING SPOILERS
[Not sure what our XP actually is, since we started at 4th... do we assume the minimum for 4th? Or a randomized point in between?]
"Hmm," Hamun Ry ponders, while trying to retrieve his arrow, if it wasn't destroyed. "Leaves? Some elvish sorcery, it seems."

Re: Four fixes for DCC
Well, I just increase the number when a corruption would occur when the player rolls his spellcheck. So if they use 4 points of spellburn, they will suffer corruption (or possibly misfire) on a roll of 1-5 when they make their spellcheck. If they use 9 points of spellburn, they suffer corruption (o...

Interesting, so you just roll a straight % check? Also, do you pick which corruption table based on the spell information?

Re: Four fixes for DCC
For me, by making the risk of corruption directly proportional to the amount of spellburn used has balanced things nicely in my group. For others, they might not like that approach or they may have players that find ways around that, too. I missed this, where did you suggest doing this? Sounds grea...

Re: Dragon Hit Points
Consider maybe that dragons grow very, very slowly. So maybe a 1-5 year old dragon is very much like a kitten. Also consider a 6hp cat is stronger than 90% of all 0 levels.

Init: 9 + 1 = 10.
Hamun Ry steroids back as far away as he can, and shoots at the thing with his longbow. 13 + 2 = 15, if that hits, 2 damage.

Re: Four fixes for DCC
My only complaint is y'all keep saying "balance" as if it is some talisman against evil. Rock/paper/scissors is balanced. DCC isn't and wasn't even meant to be. Real life isn't balanced either. That's why I think for all its gonzoness, DCC has more realism than, say, a more methodically ba...

Re: Four fixes for DCC
Hmm, if you've done this dozens of time and haven't killed the guy yet, maybe I'm just not understanding. Another thought is, a guy THAT powerful is a big juicy target. A couple Thieves from the shadows, backstabbing, should eliminate the problem. He's been killed in combat a couple times, but deat...

Re: The Revelation of Mulmo PBP - WARNING SPOILERS
"I meant, fan out in this room," Hamun Ry says. [And yeah, you can't help but notice he looks NOTICEABLY older.] "Something went wrong with the magic in this place," he says, to explain to the party. "There may be a way to reverse it, I don't know. But for now, we should be ...

Re: Four fixes for DCC
Sure, mechanically I can invent any number of things to counter a player's super-cool ability. But mechanics aren't the problem. The two problems are: 1) I don't like having to single out a player for special challenge. I just don't like doing that. I've done it many times before: I've been DMing p...

Re: Four fixes for DCC
I bet he'd cry like a girl if you attacked him with about 20 small and quick mindless undead with no eyes. What I'm saying is, I don't think it's unbalanced at all. Sure, I've done this many times, but after a dozen sessions of doing this it has become a farce: blind creatures have become a...

Re: The Revelation of Mulmo PBP - WARNING SPOILERS
"What a strange blade..." Hamun Ry says, gently prodding the hilt (it's just the hilt, right? blade's totally or just partially melted?) with the tip of a steel-headed arrow. If nothing untoward happens, he'll pick it up. I presume it doesn't look elven in origin, more like the large green...

Re: Four fixes for DCC
I've also found that surprise and ranged attacks, including spells, are wayyyyy more potent against my players than melee combat. Warriors and dwarves are pretty tough toe-to-toe. But everybody's squishy from longbow range. I damn near TPKd my party in DotSK when they came out of the tomb and encoun...

Wow! Let's assume he's about 35 years old. So, for 5d5 minutes = 12 minutes, he's aging 2 years per minute. Oof. Ending age = 59. Hair longer, beard longer, graying. He feels the magic go haywire and his body begin to age at an accelerated rate. "Urgh..." he moans as his body deter...

Re: Four fixes for DCC
I think you're exactly right about what those spells were intended for and exactly wrong that they need to be "(re)balanced"... the point of the game is gonzo, not balance. To a certain extent, that was the point of The Original Game magic-user, too. The "balance" comes in the fo...

Re: The Revelation of Mulmo PBP - WARNING SPOILERS
Can I use my prior Detect Magic result now? If not, re-roll is: 3 + 6 = 9, failure (but not lost, so he'll just try again after angrily kicking away the annoying crystals that grow underfoot). 2nd try: 8 + 6 = 14, success. Hamun Ry will investigate each body, specifically searching for rings or othe...
