Re: New Unofficial Armor and Weapon Rules Beta
That's a good observation about reach and initiative, Skyscraper. You see this perspective throughout rulesets where the heavier weapons (that tend to do more damage) are assumed to be slower and so they get an initiative penalty to help create some game balance to try to discourage everybody from a...

Re: Dodge and Parry in DCC combat
I agree that simple is best if you are playing a game where the story is the focus and not the game mechanics. Like Gilbert de Chatillon, I have a lot of real world experience fighting with these kinds of weapons in sporting events as well as in the dojo, and I promise you, hand to hand combat works...

Re: New Unofficial Armor and Weapon Rules Beta
This is just a thought, but if you are going to go into this much detail, why not add in separate damage reduction values versus different weapon types? For example, chainmail does very little to protect against piercing attacks and essentially nothing against crushing attacks.

That's how Moorcock pronounces it on the live Hawkwind album, anyway.

I know a lot of the community here supports kickstarters. Sounds like they were hacked and it would be a good idea to change your passwords if you have an account there:

I hope the choices presented are clear enough. I'm curious what the prevailing opinion about pronunciation is.

Re: Rumblings About Ritual Magic...
I allow characters in my game to cast a ritualized version of a spell that requires special components and takes many hours to complete. This gives the character a +10 bonus on the spellcheck. In some cases (such as Patron Bond), the ritualized version also requires that it be cast at a specific loc...

Re: Magic missile...
Consider this as well, before you change things around: In previous editions of D&D, you got a finite number of spell slots that were gone for the day when you cast the spell. So as a wizard character, I might have memorized a fireball and two magic missiles as part of my repertoire for the day....

Re: Difference between D&D dungeons and DCC dungeons
I don't think you can make a generalization like that, to be honest. DCC dungeons should be different only in that the designer should not be concerned about the party's ability to defeat the encounters (be they monster, trap, puzzle or role play). Rather, they should focus on trying to create a fri...

...Perhaps it could be an item that needs activating in some way on each plane-does anyone remember the blackrock gems/moonstones from Ultima Underworld/Ultima series? What about a magic map, or tome full of maps? Something like in the movie Time Bandits. It might take a combination of finding some...

Re: Ideas for Corum style "planeswalking sandbox"?
I don't have a lot to offer on this at the moment, but your post has gotten me thinking about the Corum books again. Kind of funny that Moorcock's Elric books get so much press but Corum is largely forgotten. Now I need to dust off my copy of the Swords Trilogy and re-read it. 8) And I just found a...

Re: My Stewpot of Chaos
Sounds like you have done a great job of weaving the background story together for these modules. It all fits together quite nicely. ... The PCs started at 1st level, so no funnel. We have an elf, a nature cleric and a thief, and one more player might join the game. ... Next time try a funnel first....

Re: Elf and Wizard spell questions
I have my elves and wizards choose new spells randomly, so for our game, it is possible to never get the patron spells. But I have also designed adventures with old wizard spellbooks as part of the treasure to be found with specific spells listed, or a reduced list of the spells listed in the book t...

Re: Cure Paralysis Spell Overlaps with Lay on Hands?
The cure paralysis spell seems quite a bit more versatile to me, as well as having the ability to free multiple characters with one cast of the die, as opposed to taking one round for each LoH. Yes, I could expand the LoH chart to include these effects, but I could also expand and define the Divine ...

Re: New Spells?
I agree, it takes a lot of time, and a lot of reworking. I mostly enjoy the process, though. My big hurdle, though, has been coming up with ideas for new spells that don't overlap with existing spells. For example, between Magic Missile and Fireball, you've pretty much covered just about anything yo...

Thanks again for the additional details Skyscraper, and also for your input Zargon and Maxwell Luther. This has really been helpful. Re: First Game and Some Questions!
Great write up, Lothar. I'll give some perspective based on my experience as well. As far as number of starting zeros, I usually have the party start with 4 each. Once we only had 3 players and I had them use 5 each, but usually a minimum of 4. Sounds like a lot, and the first encounter or two might...

Re: Awarding Luck
I appreciate your input, Skyscraper. This is helpful. Your players might spend luck for their PCs if they receive some more or less regularly. I know I'd be reluctant to spend that resource, unless I'm in a do-or-die situation, if the resource doesn't get replenished. Yes! This is exactly what I've ...

Re: How balanced are the Crawl! classes?
My advice, since you're just getting into it, is use the Core classes for a while and figure out what you like and don't like. Then introduce additional classes if you feel like its necessary. It's hard to imagine better advice than this. For me and my group, there hasn't been any interest in going...

Awarding Luck
Hi, I'm just wondering how some others handle this in their games. I am almost exclusively running straight dungeon crawl type adventures and realized recently that I really haven't awarded any LUCK to the party. This is balanced nicely because the players really haven't burned any LUCK, but I feel ...

I don't see anywhere where it states that a dwarf only fumbles if he rolls a "1" on both dice, so I wouldn't assume that he is just like anyone else and fumbles on either weapon if he rolls a "1".

Re: So how is Sword INT used in DCC...?
I use it to help me roleplay. Is the sword smarter than the character? If so, the character will keep finding himself in situations where the sword's agenda is being served, and if not of the same alignment, he might repeatedly find himself in situations where he is in grave danger as well. If I can...
