...I can imagine the fanbase thinking it was pretty sucky that the team let a wand do their jobs for them... I think this guy is on to something -- if the group gets slagged for relying on an item too much, they may refrain from using it unless it's really, really needed. I mean, who's going to wat...

Of course, if everybody playing would just have the simple courtesy to buy a copy of the book, no photocopies will be needed.

Re: Wands In Xcrawl
Well, in D&D 3.5 using a wand is a standard action. I have no idea if Xcrawl changes that, but I'd guess it doesn't.

If anybody happens to be looking in on this thread -- the issue appears to be with older-ish version(s) of Preview not reading the pdf file rightly.

Re: I am excited about Crime Pays
No, sir. With all due respect to you, my friend Gnomie, I will never embrace 4th edition. I tried--for two long years I tried repeatedly--to love those rules, but I can't. Understood (with a crazier amount of emphasis than the forum code will allow). ...But you're not better now??? I was sure you h...

Re: I am excited about Crime Pays
I just want to be sure I can buy this book without getting "4th edition taint" on me. pfft -- A couple saves and you're cured. No big whoop. Also, even though I have no outlet for using this book for the next year or so, (seeing the breakdown on what's in it) I'm getting more and mo...

Crime Pays preview pdf (a heads-up)
I just downloaded the preview to take a look -- it looks really dark to the point of being un-readable.
I have no idea if it's my system (Mac) or something about the pdf file, but I've never seen any other GG pdf look so dark (i.e. DCC35 which also has a tinted background on the pages).

Re: Save or die
Or if they'd rather that character go on to his Great Reward. I've also used a variant of a rule in Dread:FBoP regarding character death. In that rule... If a character "dies" in a scene, then their hit points are restored to full and they recover all spells and abilities for use during t...

Re: Warrior mechanics
Stainless I'm glad I could put your mind at ease -- I don't think MDAs are anything to worry about. From a First Edition perspective, it lets fighter types sometimes do 'far out stuff' they way wizards can, but it's focused on physical action -- think, Jackie Chan or Indiana Jones, or Bruce Willis o...

...I much prefer "degrees of success" -- where missing a save by a couple of points allows a character to do something exactly as you describe. As the mechanics stand, there's no difference between rolling a 14 and rolling a 2 if you needed to roll a 15. But I find life (and the fiction u...

Re: Save or die
I'm fine with Last Gasp being my own houserule. I'm also fine with death being a prominent factor in the game, and with it being final. My way of thinking says that the rules don't model Appendix N situations. The rules provide a framework so that the people at the gaming table can tell a group stor...

Re: Warrior mechanics
Oh dear, now I do have an issue with that. I understand what you're saying about the, "I hit him again" syndrome, but I really don't want to be thinking up and stating MDAs for every attack with the hope that I get lucky. It will only take seconds for any given attack, but those seconds w...

Re: Save or die
The only thing I would add to a Save or Die situation is that if your character does die, you get a Last Gasp maneuver... A chance to do something with the death that could aid your party. Giant tentacle dragging you down into a vast crevasse, never to be heard from again? There's a chance you could...
