For me,it was the early 80's too... the Moldvay boxset with the 3 main AD&D books (dmg,mm,phb) all at once.I could never stop looking at the boxset cover art....still wondering what could be lurking beyond the stone archway in the background.As per the game, i was hooked when the first secret do...
