Re: Halfling Lucky Charms
This quote from an earlier thread seems to put the kibosh on the wandering luck modifier interpretation: The halfling is weak on his own, but when his Luck score is combined with the rest of the party, he becomes "the ultimate team player." I have seen halfling characters save an entire pa...

Re: Halfling Lucky Charms
If your player tries to argue that rule, simply say "no". Period. "I'm not going to accept a permanent ambulatory bonus-giver into the game because that's not how I interpret the rule. If you feel otherwise, you can run a game for us, and we'll try hard to find ourselves a lucky half...

Re: Halfling Lucky Charms
The permanent modifier to all allies' rolls appears over the top to me. I doubt this was the intent, and honestly I'm not going to search the book to point to rules pages; but it would be a freakishly strong ability that the halfling should never, ever, except to save himself from certain death, gi...

Re: Halfling Lucky Charms
And then there's an additional sentence: "The halfling's Luck modifier can apply to any roll made by an ally: attack rolls, damage rolls, saves, spell checks, thief skills, and so on." To me, this last sentence is entirely extraneous if it is referring to the halfling spending luck on an ...

Yeah I think you are crazy 8) . That's probably just there in case the halfling spends more than one point, thus changing the modifier. If you are right that really changes things  . In general, a halfling is pretty unlikely to have a Luck modifier greater than +1, so my interpretation would...

Re: Halfling Lucky Charms
I noticed an odd bit of wording in the text describing the "third" use of the halfling good luck charm. If you read the first 5 sentences of the paragraph, it appears to me to be clear and complete: a halfling can spend his own luck on behalf of an ally. And then there's an additional sent...

Re: Movement question
I'm going to have to ponder this one. I actually think it sounds kind of cool to let the movement occur whenever the player wants it to. This gives dwarves and higher level characters a little more oomph, and considering how deadly the game is, I don't mind allowing the characters that boost. OTOH, ...

Re: Wizard vs Elf
A huge advantage of wizards (previously mentioned elsewhere, I think) is that wizards get to choose to be wizards, which means the player probably only goes with a wizard if the character has a good intelligence. If a player rolls these numbers: 10, 10, 8, 8, 17, 10 and happens to get the 17 in inte...

Sounds like you guys had a blast. I just played the opening of Sailors with three of my kids. I can see how the vine horrors would be easy pickings for level 1 characters, but they were murder on the 0-level troupe! The horrors never even got to use the extra auto damage from hitting twice in a roun...

Of course, if you don't allow for the possibility of a warrior with ridiculously low hit points due to a crippling birth augur, you'll also never have the pleasure of seeing such a character reach third or fourth level to everyone's astonishment. Yes, in the long run, the sheer weight of probability...

If you are interested in the decision-making process that led to the creation of D&D's magic system (i.e., "Vancian" magic), as well as the creation of the DCC RPG magic system, I strongly encourage you to read these books. I would shorten this to just say, "I strongly encourage ...

Re: Burning LUCK before a roll ??
Can you burn luck on a mighty deeds roll? At low levels, it seems to me that MD rolls would be one place burning luck before the roll would usually be worth it, since the extent of the deed's success increases with each point by which you exceed 3, and burning 2 points would give you an automatic de...

I started off with Steve Jackson's Melee and Wizards pocket games in middle school, late 1970s. Then my best friend's brother showed us his AD&D character sheet, and I would not rest until my folks got me the three books. I've played every edition of D&D since, with 4e being the only one tha...

Re: Thieves'/Halflings Luck and (again!) Mighty Deeds of Arm
I haven't played yet, but I would always apply any "end of adventure" luck bonuses upon completion of the adventure, and add it to the character's current luck score, which for thieves and halflings will most likely be less than their maximum because at the end of any given adventure, they...
