Re: Magic Items and DCC
Sweet@! I'm so happy I can prove someone *read* my posts at all! (I worry I'm writing into outer space sometimes) Disagreeing with me is totally allowed, though I'm not sure you do. I am not a total big fan of this concept as a core part of the DCC. There are low, middle and high magic games. So the...

Re: Save or die
The only thing I would add to a Save or Die situation is that if your character does die, you get a Last Gasp maneuver... A chance to do something with the death that could aid your party. Giant tentacle dragging you down into a vast crevasse, never to be heard from again? There's a chance you coul...

Re: Warrior mechanics
Oh dear, now I do have an issue with that. I understand what you're saying about the, "I hit him again" syndrome, but I really don't want to be thinking up and stating MDAs for every attack with the hope that I get lucky. It will only take seconds for any given attack, but those seconds w...

Re: Reading Appendix N
I got all the Conan collections in black (along with some stories, Solomon Kane, Bran, and Kull). But still: what's the link to Gutenberg? I can never find anything on there. Conan "the phoenix on the sword" is pretty sweet. It's the do-over of a Kull story, which was great, but it added t...

Re: Warrior mechanics
Yes, but I'm just covering general guidelines -- it's up to the DM to get specific. I'm really striving to avoid complexity and referencing the rules. There are guidelines, and in play I just call it situation by situation. Such a guideline book's gonna be the first needed expansion to the DCC RPG ...

Re: Multi-classing in DCC RPG?
And if we don't have skills, for preference of ability score checks, could we *please* not end up with rules where Thieves are the only ones who can climb over a fence with "climb walls"? That's the wrong use of thief skills. In my Swords & Wizardry campaign we use it almost like the ...

Re: Grappling in DCC?
If I'm put in a headlock, that doesn't mean I'm down to 0hp. In fact, that's a silly concept: what, I'm put in chains and I'm at 0hp, but put a key in the lock, release me from the chains, and I'm "healed" up to my full HP? I don't think so. MDAs will cover a lot, especially if the book is...

Re: Multi-classing in DCC RPG?
I like optimization in terms of good design, so long as it's in-character: weird combos that are off-concept bother me. That said, the game doesn't need to be all things to all people. If there isn't a solid multiclassing ruleset, it's not the end of the world. What's this discussion of "backgr...

Re: Blackdirge’s Dungeon Denizens as Monster Manual for DCC
Some points: 1) Orcs are Appendix N. Tolkien is on that list, I believe. 2) NPC goons are more frequent than horrors from the deep. I would like piles of human goons to fight. 3) Generic monsters = setting flavor. I want to have goblins in the forests, orcs in the mountains, and giant bugs and swarm...

MDA: meh, just initials of your idea. Someone would have started (may have already!)... but I'll take credit, sure! ;) How many warriors in your group are rolling a d3, d4, d5, d6, or d7 for their damage die? Not many, I'm guessing. :) That's the progression for the first 5 levels of the warrior cla...

Re: Dragons
I have an idea for this, but I'll finish it before I put it out there. Frankly, I have never fought dragons as a player. Only used them as a GM. Not even Calcryx in Sundered Citadel. Sad, right? Statblocks for ease of use are also good, though. Named, actual dragons so players can notch their belts ...

Re: Multi-classing in DCC RPG?
To multi-class, you pick a primary class... and then a secondary. Your take a 30% XP hist on all experience gained when you multi-class. This covers the additional experience necessary to acquire the secondary class. If I did this, I'd want a separate XP rate for multiclass characters. Not everyone...

HPL invented... mythos guys... although certainly his was the inspiration for Mind Flayers... Close. The thing that inspired Gary to create mind flayers (which first appeared in The Strategic Review #1, Spring 1975) was the cover of Brian Lumley's novel, The Burrowers Beneath , which is a Cthulhu M...

Re: Multi-classing in DCC RPG?
Different XP is a nightmare for the GM, or can be. I get the balance issues, just saying. Would Elric be multiclass, or are you going to allow Wizards to use swords (like Elric and Gandalf)? Elric would be a member of the Elf class. ;) (sounds of gurgling, quivering limbs, and fumes heating up to t...

Re: Origins of D&D ideas: monsters, classes, spells, etc.
REH seems to have invented Nagas, in "The God in the Bowl". I do like that story. Would the ghost army in LotR count for this? Or the Barrow Wights? Or, heck, Beorn as a were-bear? For certain Hobbits, and the term Elves, Dwarves, I think. HPL invented... mythos guys... although certainly ...

Tolkien is on Appendix N, so calling them Elves is still good.
I like regular spell names, but the all-new spells can easily have different names.

Criticals: The extra die should only be for BAB. The d20 should be the only die that determines a crit, and it should always be on 20. That works, and it works for a reason. It's the to-hit die, the other one is for modifiers. Why would the modifier die determine crit? Also, the modifier die determi...

Re: Healing and clerics
One more thing: If I was doing this I'd have HP and I'd have an Injury track. The Injury track would be a list of all the penalties I'd gotten from critical hits, from falling, from poison, and especially from dropping below 0hp and being brought back. It would not have to do with HP directly, as I ...

Re: Healing and clerics
Smathis: love the wound chart idea. It reminds me a lot of the SWSE Condition track, that gives a penalty to characters who lose X % of their total hp in one shot, or have other effects (force powers, poisons, etc.) that don't do hp damage. Ability Score Damage: I'm in the "this is horribly ann...

Thanks for the response! Alignment: The 9-axis Alignment system isn't (what I call) ANR (appendix N revival; as opposed to OSR, "old school revival", which isn't really what you've been pointing out as your guide) as much as a hand-me-down of gaming conventions over the years. Considering ...

Alignment and Religion
This is a quote of the thread going on at ENworld. That said: most of it I like, but the idea of demons as a mechanic for player spellcasters gives the wrong impression for the game. I see its place in the genre, but how can I tell friends of mine (who I'm proud of having, as they're good people) wh...
