Re: Wizard Spells

Background Vathek the Merchant found the Key of Sezrekan in a 0 level funnel. The Key contained rules to allow a 0 level to possibly advance to 1st level wizard, if the player wishes. It was very obscure about the contents, being left up to the Judge to decide. However, the Key would eventually tur...

Re: Wizard Spells

I've debated using the grimoire from the 0 level funnel - fleshed out by using the grimoire generation at Purple Sorcerer, or creating a brand new one. However, a grimoire for every wizard character seems a bit overboard considering the DCC landscape. I am of the opinion that there should be only on...

Re: Wizard Spells

Generally, they should have their spells for 1st Level play. I think many folks do this randomly or semi-randomly (roll 2 or 3 randomly, and pick the remainder is a popular option; rolling all randomly, but allowing one or two to be traded out if the 4 results seem unimpressive is another). You can...

Re: Interrupting a Spellcaster

More thread necro! ;) I'd rule that if a wizard gets a better initiative than an opponent and casts a spell that only takes one action, that spell goes off before the opponent can react or try to interrupt. But if a spell takes a round or longer to cast, any opponent, no matter what the initiative o...

Re: New Player - Action Dice

An Action Die would be used for any action that requires a check. Jumping a chasm with no particular breadth, while not being chased by goblins, may require no check at all. Then again, if it's just beyond "easy" for a human, plus you're being chased (so time is important) then it will re...

Re: Wizard Spells

I've looked in all the relevant places in the core rules, but I cannot find any resolution to my specific dilemma regarding a 1st level wizard's first spells: Is the general consensus for a newly advanced 0 level to 1st level wizard to choose their first four spells, roll for them randomly, or do yo...

Re: Campaign thoughts?

A list of "Downtime Activities" could be useful right now, but I am of the opinion that 5e's interpretation of Downtime Activities falls short of actual usefulness in setting up follow-up encounters, adventures and the basic continuation of the campaign. It showed some activities that char...

Re: Another Amazing Hook

I picked up the DCC Day 2021 Adventure Pack. It has 3 adventures in it, and the 2nd one is a Dying Earth adventure, "Fathoms Below Witch Isle". I haven't read it all yet, but it says it is compatible with DCC characters, and that tells me that DCC:DE will have its own classes & races! ...

Re: Another Amazing Hook

Sweet serendipity! I'm going over the modules I do have right now, scouring them for world/item/NPC information that I can link together. I don't want to run a traditional "D&D" style campaign, but I do want the players to be able to trace a path from one module to the next. I only hav...

Re: Mercurial Magic as Campaign Hook

That grimoire generator is handy! I used it to generate "The Key of Sezrekan" which is mentioned, but left to the DM to flesh out in "Beneath the Well of Brass" the 2021 DCC RPG Day offering. The player new to RPGs had a character pick it up and read the first page, and can now a...

Re: What other Appendix N inspired settings would you like to see?

I think I have a copy of Taltos somewhere in my massive paperback collection. I don't recall if I've actually read it! I've contemplated running old TSR modules with DCC rules. They aren't strictly "Appendix N", but I'd love to see Goodman Games DCC conversions of the OAR series they've do...

Re: Mighty deed of arms and other classes

In DCC, while we have a Fortitude save for endurance, we are missing a save for raw feat of strength (a Brawn Save?). I house rule that by using a creature (pc or npc) attack modifier as a proxy because the stronger you are the harder you tend to hit in DCC and, unlike a direct utilisation of the S...

Re: Original Adventurers Reincarnated

Sounds fun! Yes, keep us posted! I started with Holmes Basic in 80-81, but soon moved to BX because there were no more Holmes Basic on the shelves in 82! I've always played a mash-up of BX and AD&D, and DCC seems like the perfect segue up from that classic 80's combo. We had hundreds of characte...

Re: Mighty deed of arms and other classes

Give them a lower die for a Deed if a non-fighter. I wouldn't go that route myself. At level 1, a Fighter has 1d3 for Deeds with 3 being the bar of success. Going any less would make deeds impossible for any other class. Something like tripping an opponent shouldn't be impossible. Maybe it's just m...

This sounds like a great campaign world! Its just how I did my 5e campaign world 4-5 years ago, and the players loved it.

I'd love to start a DCC campaign using this world-building technique. 8)

Re: DCC Summoner - Yet Another Character Generator

I love this. Thanks for sharing!

Can you make the results savable?

I wound up taking screen shots of them.

I'll have to write these onto character sheets later, but the best option would be to save the results to a pdf.

Still, this is really cool! 8)

I wrote some "Vancian" spells for OD&D for Footprints #25.

Look for the article named Colledician Magic Vol I.

I have no idea if they really are as "Vancian" as they should be, except for their basic outlandishness and Vancian naming conventions.

Re: DCC Day 2021 Adventure Pack

The Quickstarts were all printed at the same time -- generally speaking, GG blows through a ton of those, most of them offered for free. Only the covers were different on the black & gold version and the one released yesterday. The interiors are identical. I actually don't mind that they're ide...
