Re: Appendix N Comic Books

Lately I've been reading Thorgal comics and for me it has a lot od Appendix N feel. There you can find unusual adventures, fantastic locations, mix of sci-fi and fantasy, struggles between gods, weirdness and mature themes. It has also an interesting storyline, so I highly recommend it.

Re: Funky Dice a la Holmes Basic

Yeah, this is a funny and interesting fact for sure :) . It is still actual because, I think, it is probably the best method possible. I like it more than Zocchi on d%, as I dislike checking in charts.

Re: Funky Dice a la Holmes Basic

Creating results this way is certainly an option if one lacks the strange dice. However, for me, and I guess for many others this is not a very appeasing solution. I prefer to minimize maths during my sessions and focus on narrative and descriptions. I also tend to like very fast, non-complicated co...

Re: So about that suit of +1 Chainmail

Changing spells mid-campaign usually brings players' rage so I'm glad I've been warned by you in advance ;]. Monster with +18 to hit attacking a wizard is a problem, but I will never forget one of my player's cleric who stood with a magic platemail, shield, some protective rings and spells' buffs am...

Re: Alignment

Well it is indeed a tough discussion. I tend to think about it because I often play with people new to RPGs and they usually ask - what does lawful and chaotic mean? It may be left open to interpretation or little unclear with more advanced players, but with newcomers not that much. Therefore I need...

Re: Alignment

In our campaign I tell the players that law = pro-civilization, chaos = anti-civilization. This has worked out pretty well. The lawful gods and powers are bringers of culture, art, science, and the defenders of kings. The chaotic gods represent animal powers and primal urges. The neutral gods are f...

Re: So about that suit of +1 Chainmail

Hmm well it is not good, thanks for pointing this out, I'll probably try to houserule here a little, because this is clearly not a way I'd like to play. If we had typical Vancian magic it could be bearable, but with potentially unlimited low-level DCC spells per day at higher levels it does seem lik...

Re: So about that suit of +1 Chainmail

Personally, I don't like the idea of +x armors and generally +x to AC protective magical items. I have an experience from former dnd campaign where my players were high levels and possessed suits of +4 or +5 armors, along with some rings of protection. In my experience that didn't go well, because w...

Re: Longbow vs Crossbow

I'm not certain I'm sure what you mean by that. All three items doing the same damage? That's great. All three items having differing ranges and the item that, IRL, fires further NOT being the weapon that fires furthest? That's a bit of an odd duck. No, my comment didn't concern longbow range. I wa...

Re: Longbow vs Crossbow

Yep, that's totally a feature! :) I'm sick of learning tons of rules and 1 hour long fights. I want to be able to write an adventure with all npcs fast, then resolve all questions in combat on the spot, not by searching in the various supplements for 10 minutes. Not to mention lots of rules usually ...

Adding the whole attribute sounds really cool. Well I think I'll just playtest several possibilities and check which one proves best.

Finding and disabling traps

I'm curious how you, fellow game masters determine if the trap has been found and disarmed. For most of the time I've been doing it DnD 3rd edition style - thief rolled finding traps then disarming and the trap was harmless. Later I started doing it OD&D style - describe where and how you search...

Re: Bringing back roll-under attribute checks?

Roll under attribute is cool, gives much more advantage to the person with a higher attribute and also allows to adjust test difficulty by adding or substracting a number from the roll. The question is - should it also be done with skills? Not to mention the whole idea of skills is quite controversi...

I agree with the druid as a cleric statement. Indeed it is even suggested somewhere in the DCC rulebook. Adjusting some spells should be sufficient.

Re: Longbow vs Crossbow

Well to be honest I used to think that crossbows were much more powerful than bows, which is not true. They were just really easy to use by an unskilled bowman. Nevertheless this is a game open to houseruling and nothing is written in stone. I enjoy DCC mostly because of it's mood, splendid adventur...

Re: Longbow vs Crossbow

Probably an error, I can't think about any specific reason why crossbows should have better range than longbows - it's well known historical fact, that longbows had better range and better rate of fire.

Re: Alignment

Some interesting take on Lawful-Chaotic alignment on a more cosmic scale: http://jrients.blogspot.com/2008/07/jeffs-threefold-apocalyptic-alignment.html I believe it has more old-school approach, meaning that Chaos wants to destroy the Universe, and Law subordinate it under it's agenda (gods and dev...

Re: Bringing back roll-under attribute checks?

It's mentioned only while speaking of Luck check in case of incoming death - roll your Luck score or below to survive. Other attribute rolls are made the standard way, 1d20 + modifier. I must admit it also bothers me. On one hand it is kinda old school, because back then there wasn't much emphasis o...

For me - you can't dispel unless stated in description, that caster can end the effect. I think I'll adopt the idea of casting the reverse spell with d16, sounds pretty good.

Re: Portal Under the Stars report

Thanks for this Google group! I'll post it there as well, I even see session reports section, so it will be proper. The balance between lethality and ways to avoid death is indeed great. I also like the high randomness during character creation. I believe both these factors can give you a feeling, t...

Portal Under the Stars report

Today I played my first DCC RPG session, ran Portal Under the Stars. I decided to write session report, because before playing DCC I enjoyed reading them, so maybe someone will have fun reading this one. There were 12 adventurers total, 4 controlled by me (pretty passive) as a GM, and 8 by my two pl...

Re: Alignment

Well, after reading short descriptions in DCC rulebook I understand alignments as follow: Lawful characters are not necessarily highly organized in their daily customs, but of course they may be. They always seem to be bound by some rules or beliefs that are more important to them than their own per...
