Re: Whats your setting? Share with us whatever you have!
Some of the settings I have used: Fraeland. The different colored stars are cities in different kingdoms. Fraeland2.jpg The area the party adventured in I created more detail: Central_Fraeland2.jpg I also ran another campaign using this map. Pretty basic, but I wasn't sure if the players were going ...

Re: Another alignment question.
You might also consider that to the Immortals, their perspective on alignment might be quite different than it is for characters, whose lives are over in the blink of an eye in the cosmic sense. Deities have a long time to see their plans come to fruition and can easily afford to cooperate with othe...

Mine arrived yesterday! At first I thought the d7 was printed wrong, but then after I rolled it once or twice it dawned on me that the numbers have to be printed on the edges.

I made this adjustment to corruption:

It has worked fairly well for me, but some of this all depends on the type of people you are playing with, I guess.

I award luck pretty much anytime the party destroys undead. I also award luck for creative problem solving, particularly if the party is able to overcome/circumvent an obstacle that they would never be able to deal with via the standard frontal assault method. On a couple of occasions I have awarded...

I try to work the Halfling into the narrative if it's not too hard. Halfling Luck saves a friend from a trap? I might say that the Halfling shouted out a warning at the last moment to avert disaster. If it's not easy to slip into the narrative, I just move forward without adding any details to tie t...

I only let them level up 1 character to 1st level. That becomes the main guy. We treat any others that survive the funnel as henchmen from that point onward, keeping them at 9 experience points. If the player's 1st level character gets killed (which has been pretty common for my experiences), they ...

Re: Neutralize Poison or Disease vs. Lay on Hands
Even the lowest successful result has advantages over the Lay on Hands ability. With a spell check of 14 I can cure poison in anyone, whereas I need a check result of 22+ to do so to a character of opposing alignment with LoH.

Re: Running a Level 0 Character
The rules are good guidelines, but always remember that you are free to do whatever you want to enhance the story. I would advocate sticking to the rules pretty closely if you have little or no experience, but if you want to create a situation that requires a spell to be cast from a scroll in order ...

We had a similar issue when we started our campaign. At one point, everyone in the party bought the farm except one character, and except for that one player, everyone else has cycled through several 1st level characters up until this point. Once the party all reached 2nd level, though, it seemed li...

Nicely done!
I have found the critical and fumble tables to be the most useful ones to have on my screen. They seemed to be the ones where it really slows things down to go leafing through the book to reference during game play.

I don't disagree with the swingy-ness of things, Atlascott, because they can easily go the other way just as quickly (and since a dragon gets an initiative bonus equal to it's HD, they will tend to win the initiative battle more often than not). But I will make one comment, and that's that I would n...

Re: DCC Halfling only class that's worse than Basic D&D sour
Halflings can be quite fun to play, but you are right - they are seldom the star of the show. The ability to literally save others lives in the party by being a good luck charm is extremely rewarding, though. No, they are not great hand to hand specialists like warriors and dwarves, or even as good ...

Re: Patron Problems- The Three Fates
Hmm, interesting situation, but I see some nice possibilities. First, I should start by saying that whenever I look at any table in the rules, I use it only as a guideline. Many things, like spells, I do not fiddle with unless I see a great need, or a great opportunity to advance the story in some i...

Re: Max Hit Points
The first couple of sessions we played I had a lot of deaths of 1st level characters and the low number of hp's was the most consistent negative feedback that I got from the players. We talked about it and in the end I decided to give all characters 2 bonus hp's upon reaching 1st level. In many case...

I hear you, Midges. I play rpgs with a group of about 10 to 12 semi-regulars. We've played D&D almost exclusively through the years, and advanced through the different editions, but the group has largely stayed on 3E. 4E was so bad that no one has any interest in even trying 5E, and about half o...

I assume you mean a game where you do not allow Clerics as opposed to one where everyone in the party just happens to choose other classes. It can work if you don't have anyone interested in playing Clerics anyway, I guess. There are some challenges involved, namely the death rate will be much highe...

You might also augment the group by adding in an NPC after the party reaches first level. You can choose a class that is not yet represented, so that the party has a little more diversity and one more member. I think that increasing the party size from 4 to 5 will have a significant decrease in the ...
