This is an attack with the wizards hand, not through a melee weapon. Damage would be equal to an unarmed attack, which is 1d3 + STR in addition to the extra damage from the spell.

I think that is the issue here, the rules don't say it at all for a cleric. They do for a wizard. By the way, clerics and wizards use differnt types of magic, so saying a cleric shouldn't be as good at idol magic as a wizard isn't really a comparison at all.

The wizard does get 1 more spell, but with Mercurial magic that is not always an advantage. The iron sensitivity deals 1 hp of damage a day, but since the elf also has higher hit dice is this really an advantage?
