Re: Luck use and mighty deeds
Darn! I'm fresh out of pans! Would a cupcake work as well?? No thanks - I am trying to cut down and shed a few pounds before Christmas. In what situation do you ever roll the deed die on it's own? It is always part of an attack roll and is integral to the attack roll. But lots of roll...

Re: What to read next?
I might suggest that you take the idea of appendix N in a more general sense. Just read something that interests you, and don't look at the list in the old DM's guide as though it's a required reading assignment in a college course. Read for the enjoyment of reading, and I think you will find more i...

Re: Luck use and mighty deeds
I simply disagree. There is an attack roll , of which the deed die is a part. There is no "Deed roll", per se. I would allow anyone to modify the attack roll with Luck all they like, but that doesn't change the probabilities of the deed die. I see allowing Luck to tweak a Deed as a houser...

As I've always said: If there are two ways to interpret the way something is written, and one makes more sense than the other, it was probably meant to mean that way.

Re: Four fixes for DCC
jozzxyqk, I see characters die quite regularly in my gaming sessions. I don't have a huge sample set - we've played about 12 or 15 times, but there have been at least 10 or 12 post-funnel deaths with a party of 6 adventurers. A couple of characters have also decided to retire due to the reduction in...

Re: Four fixes for DCC
Hi Johann. I think you're handling your areas of concern rather well, but I have a few thoughts I figured I'd throw out there for your consideration. 1. The balance is spotty in some places (Elves vs Wizards) As mentioned by others, the iron vulnerability could be a bit of a liability, though if you...

Re: Searching the Room
 Fortunately I haven't ever really had to deal with this problem, or maybe I should say that I never turned it into a problem. Sometimes the people I play with spend more detail on describling their actions, and sometimes a little bit less. <shrug> We play rpg's for mutual enjoyment, and I am ...

Re: Appendix N broken down by references
Wow, that's quite extensive, and a good find. There may be a few sources I would question as the "Primary" source. For instance, Conan is based on historical european "barbarians", so I wouldn't really say he is the primary source of the barbarian class (although he is clearly a ...

Thanks everyone! I'm working on a few more, too. Love it. Stealing for my campaign. It's pronounced Kah-Ah-Bo-Leth, right? Yes, that's the pronunciation I was going for. By all means, please use it, just do me a favor and don't publish it. This is nice! Can you explain how the poison damage w...

Re: Starting Cleric spells
I think what Beermotor is saying is that clerics have other skills that are part of their repertoire (like better hit points and better combat skills) whereas Wizards, just cast spells, so you would expect the overall effectiveness of their spellcasting ability to be greater than the cleric's spellc...

Re: Varying the types of treasures, beyond just gold
Here's some ideas for you, hopefully you find some of them useful: Consider making some of the magic items "sleeper" items. By that I mean that when the characters get it, they don't know how to use the magic yet, and will need to go on more adventures to figure out how, or to wake up some...

Secret Doors and Surprise
I'm just curious how folks handle these two items in their games. 1. Secret doors: Do you use the d20 system with a DC to beat to find them? Do you give Thieves a bonus to finding them? 2. Surprise: For many years I have not used a random roll for this, relying instead on my judgement of how much no...

Re: The DCC RPG Economy. I think the prices are off.
Is a club just a stick? Or is it a weapon that won't fail at the exact wrong moment in battle? To wit, I never see baseball players use any old branch when they are at the plate. But then again, I'm not really watching baseball, so maybe they do... Essentially. You wouldn't want to just pick up any...

Re: The DCC RPG Economy. I think the prices are off.
So given that 100 cp = 10 sp = 1 gp... And let's say an average of 2 coppers a week, that adds up to around 1gp a year! If so then there goes the prices. 8 years to buy a mule? It takes 3 years to buy your own club? 5 years to buy 20 arrows? How could a bow hunter survive? Using barter should not c...

Re: Mixed Party Alignment
I never liked the idea that alignments are straight-jackets with no room for variation. I look at the world around me and I see infinite examples of people with different alignments who cooperate for their mutual success, so I always felt that the game should allow for that as well. I think they sho...

Re: Question about Automatic Critical via Spellburn
Just keep my comments in the right context, guys. I'm only suggesting ways to counter a player who decides to start using massive spellburn in what he percieves to be the last climatic encounter of the adventure. And these are just a couple of suggestions, there's obviously several other things you ...

Sounds great!
I really like the setting and they way your world sort of fades into rumors, so to speak, as you get to the edges of people's knowledge. Also like how you've discarded the things you don't like replacing them with better storylines and made it all your own.
Nicely done!

Two Weapon Fighting
So am I interpretting things correctly on this? If I am using two weapons, I get two attacks per Action Die, so when I get a second AD, I would get 4 attacks? If so, would you allow a character to take two attacks with their first AD and a single attack with the second one?

Re: Question about Automatic Critical via Spellburn
Thanks for the clarifications. So the rules as written result in a the maximum effect... The case in question was a final big boss battle at the end of the dungeon. The wizard used his patron bond to summon a demon ally. I need to go back and look at the numbers, but I am sure that the highest spel...

Hmmm... Not a bad system. It's also nice for when you are rolling opposed checks, like trying to hold a door shut when another creature is trying to force it open.

Re: Question about Automatic Critical via Spellburn
I think it doesn't make sense, thematically and semantically, to do what y'all are saying. For example, take a level 1 Elf spellburning the hell out of a patron bond for obvious reasons. The way y'all have suggested it goes, a guy who ROLLs a 20 and spellburns 1 point will be doing much better than...

Re: Question about Automatic Critical via Spellburn
I have the spellcaster roll the die to see if a 1 comes up, but ignore any other roll and use a 20. If a 1 comes up the spell fails and the spellcaster suffers a fumble. Otherwise the spell is cast at it's best possible effect for that caster (based on 20 + all normal modifiers + 2x CL). If you add ...
