Tower out of Time follow-up adventures?

So my party completed the Tower out of Time last night. They managed to stop the great evil, kind of - they used some divination magic to ask if S’lissakk survived his "landing" beyond the horizon, and I said "yes." Now, they won't likely encounter him/her/it again for some time,...

Re: DCC & Anomalous Subsurface Environment by Patrick Wetmor

I really like the idea of patrons being a form of insanity. Another possibility is that patrons could be AIs that are buried underground, located on mountaintops, or are stuck in other sub-orbital locations. This means that they can do many of the same things as the orbital gods, but their reduced c...

Re: DCChammer

It really depends which version of the Warhammer universe you want to run. If you go back to the 1st edition WFRP and 1st-2nd editions of WFB, then the DCC RPG can work with virtually no changes. Just add in the appropriate deities and patrons. In later editions of the games, the tone became more he...

Re: 5th edition Warlock

Elric? Never read them. But that wasn't a RPG game. Well, not until 1981 it wasn't. At any rate, the point is that nobody is "stealing" ideas from anyone here. The DCC RPG takes inspiration from the same sources as D&D, so it's not surprising that some similar concepts come up. I stil...

Re: 5th edition Warlock

I remember reading some stories a while back about some albino dude with a magic sword who made a pact with a patron, too. Probably hardly anyone has ever read it though. It was by some guy named "Heath-rooster" or something.

Re: How do you define min/max?

I agree that min/maxing and power gaming are basically expressions of competitiveness. I also admit to being somewhat guilty of it myself. It's normal, and expected, for players to do their best in an RPG, and one of the ways of doing well is to have an "effective" character. After all, mo...

You wouldn't say an inch-and-a-quarter diameter dowel rod was compatible with an inch diameter hole because you can whittle it down with a knife, would you? That is basically how compatible DCC is with D&D. I'd say it's more like a 25 mm dowel in a one-inch hole, IMO - its close enough for most...

Re: Portal Under the Stars

I found that the frightened peasants tended naturally to huddle in groups at various points in the room, so I would just have the flames hit every character in the largest group. I guess if you were using a full battlemat you could just sketch out a cone or line effect for the flames, but we were ju...

Re: The DCC RPG Economy. I think the prices are off.

If the lowest wage earner was making say 2 coppers a day, which is accurate per research, how much does a minimum wage earner in recent times make in a day (take home!)? I'd compare the two numbers as the base. Say pick a take home pay as $5/hour, 8 hours is $40. That makes a copper equal to $20 bu...

...they are much more attracted to the production quality and customizability of Pathfinder (sigh!)... Perhaps in the fullness of time they will realize the customizability of DCC - it's there in the details and in how you parse them for your character! Oh, absolutely - it's not a flaw in the game ...

Re: The DCC RPG Economy. I think the prices are off.

So then, assuming most of many peasants' income is in the form of barter, but what should be the equivalent value or a weeks wages for farmers, tradesmen? If it is to be in line with the 0 level men-at-arms, that would be around 1-4coppers a week. So given that 100 cp = 10 sp = 1 gp... And let's sa...

Re: DCC with Rise of the Runelords - madness?

The problem is that I can't handle the complexity anymore. Too much of my brain is busy tracking my schedule, my lesson plans, my marking, my other duties, and my own family. DCC replaces most of that complexity with random tables, which are easy! I just have to look at them and roll some dice. I'm...

Re: Race separate from Class

To me, it seems you're wrecking the flavor of the old school game by allowing the rule changes. Basically you're just evolving the game to AD&D, so why not play a game that already has the evolved rules as opposed to having to tailor the rules of the old way? I think in the old school way, the ...

Re: Mixed Party Alignment

I agree with this, but..... .......within the context of the DCC game, alignment is real. Unless, in anyone's particular game, it isn't. I'm pretty sure alignment can be modified, replaced, or ignored without ruining the game in any meaningful way. Besides, I'd rule that healing someone of opposed ...

Re: DCC with Rise of the Runelords - madness?

For one thing, you would have to tone down the loot, especially magic items. And you'd have to adapt the higher level monsters more thoroughly as they go over CR20. I think the story would still work though. Yeah, toning down the loot shouldn't be too hard - I get the sense that DCC PCs don't need ...

DCC with Rise of the Runelords - madness?

I run a board games club at the Jr/Sr high school where I teach. Among my big box o' games I have the Pathfinder Beginner Box, and some of the kids have shown interest in it. My main problem is that, while I like Pathfinder, I loathe having to GM it. The DCC RPG has really caught my imagination, tho...

Re: Race separate from Class

I like the take that Adventurer Conqueror King has on this. Basically, they went from the "race as class" side, and said "Why would demihumans follow the same careers as humans?". But, to add more flexibility, they have a couple of classes for the demihumans. Dwarves can be fight...

Shipping dice to Canada is expensive. Anyone know where you can purchase them up north? Sorry everyone for the thread necro, but I bought some Gamescience dice from www.darkelfdice.com and had them shipped to Canada. The price and shipping cost were both reasonable, and their customer service has b...

If your player tries to argue that rule, simply say "no". Period. "I'm not going to accept a permanent ambulatory bonus-giver into the game because that's not how I interpret the rule. If you feel otherwise, you can run a game for us, and we'll try hard to find ourselves a lucky half...

Great ideas for turning the discovery process into part of the storyline. I am a fan of this approach, but does anyone have any suggestions about handling the mechanics of it in the meantime? I mean, say the warrior decides to use the magic sword that he's found while he's looking for the specifics...

Consequences of PC deaths

Im curious about how different people handle the death of a (greater than 0-level) PC in the DCC RPG. I didn't see any guidelines in the rulebook for it, and I'm interested in ideas and especially practical experience for what people do when a PC bites it. Here are some methods I've seen, and some p...
