Re: Deed actions that would insta-kill an enemy

My point is that you are not really arguing the physics of the situation any more, but the plausibility. And plausibility is defined, in part, by experience. I don't think that there is a "right" or a "wrong" way to run this (or, at least, not between your two options), and both...

Re: Deed actions that would insta-kill an enemy

Why does someone have to get thrown back 2-3 yards to be knocked off a ledge, anyway? The point was that shoving an enemy backward would result in them grabbing at you, and I said that in my game I wouldn't just allow a single hit to knock somebody off a cliff and would probably allow some ...

Re: Deed actions that would insta-kill an enemy

As far as the NFL I don't know what games your watching but I see prepared guys get put down on their ass shoved backwards 5 yards frequently from the best D-linemen out there and that's without weaponry. Could you please link to a video of this happening? Remember, I said that they couldn't shove ...

Re: Deed actions that would insta-kill an enemy

The beauty of fantasy battle that's different then fencing or sumo is the attacker generally has no clue what to expect they have to react quickly which makes the toppling the cultist over the side much more likely. As well as the player doing the shoving. Which is what I said. Also the part of Peo...

Re: Deed actions that would insta-kill an enemy

If you watch fencing competitions, you can see that people get "pushed back" by attacks simply in their attempts to avoid them. Only because you can't step sideways in fencing. In reality, you do not have to throw people over a ledge, because opponents do sometimes step backwards, l...

Re: Deed actions that would insta-kill an enemy

So you don't want realism, you want action.

That's not what you said.

Re: Deed actions that would insta-kill an enemy

I could push my friend into said pit much easier if I was swinging a blade or a shield at his person then if I just tried it from a grapple. Realism I absolutely go for but that applies to everyone in game. But in the scenario your friend would be armed too, since the enemies are armed. I used push...

Re: Deed actions that would insta-kill an enemy

Would I allow it? Yes. Would I make it easy? No. The cultists would not just line up around the edge of the pit and wait for somebody to knock them in. And even if they were at first, they wouldn't just topple in. Try this. Have a friend stand near the edge of your yard and pretend the edge is a bot...

Re: DCC Boxed Set

Hah I thought we had veered enough from the original topic to warrant a shot against thAC0  it was fine for its Time but probably the cludgiest mechanism for new players. Yeah, it's not thac0 that I like, as much as I dislike the open ended and incremental progression of d20. I like that i...

Re: DCC Boxed Set

Fortunately we shirked that thAC0 business long ago ;) TROLL! I actually like Thac0, not necessarily the descending number for AC, but I liked the way it "topped out." For me d20 gets crazy when the BAB gets to point where it's over 20. The roll loses something and the math breaks.

Re: DCC Boxed Set

It wasn't designed to be, and it didn't stay that way. Painting it as such is just incorrect. Just because it was your first intro to the game, doesn't mean that's where it was designed. Nope, sorry, I showed you a direct quote from the 1977 D&D rulebook, which explicitly states that it is a &q...

Re: DCC Boxed Set

The Holmes D&D was basically a cleaned up version of D&D+Greyhawk. It was sold in 1977 as an intro set and focused on mainstream outlets. I don't argue that for about 4 years they tried this strategy. What I dispute is that the game was designed for this purpose. It wasn't. D&D+Greyhawk'...

Re: DCC Boxed Set

Sorry, my original reply [http://www.goodman-games.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=95948#p95948] wasn't directed at you personally, just the thread. All I did was state my support for a Boxed Set (hypothetical), and backed it up with my personal (anecdotal) belief. You're the one that poked holes at my ...

Re: DCC Boxed Set

Some of you guys are making it sound like a "Basic Set" would replace your Core Book. How? Like the Core Book will become expired, or obsolete, in some way? Probably some bad taste left over from when 4e got replaced by the 4e Essentials line. I know that feeling. Why? Because I said I wo...

Re: DCC Boxed Set

Is DCC for beginners or those who have never played? It doesn't seem so. In the end it's their game, so they can do what they wish, I just stated it wouldn't be something I would buy, and I'd rather have supplements and modules. Sorry. If you want to buy a beginner's box more power to you, but I don...

Re: DCC Boxed Set

I'd much rather they produced more supplements and modules than the same rules I already have. Sorry, it's a neat idea but nothing I'd be interested in buying. Agreed. I remember the TSR era boxed sets but prefer hardback books... especially my gold foil DCC hardback. 8) Yup! Got me one of those to...

Re: clarification on Mighty Deeds of Arms

Dark Lord you are perceiving insults where there are none meant, so ill let others discuss this. But obviously everyone doesn't see it the same way. Have fun. That's my point, and why I was questioning you on it. I don't perceive an insult, but I am wondering why you seem to think I am not allowing...

Re: clarification on Mighty Deeds of Arms

I think the risk factors in play come more from the 9 headed frog demon of doom trying to squish the fighter enjoying doing all these cool things and not from some mechanical system. This. The fighter is the front line guy, and most of the time in DCC you can go from full health to dead in one blow...

Re: clarification on Mighty Deeds of Arms

So you have played a game where each fighter/dwarf has declared some mighty deed with every attack?? Seems overkill. Its not special if you are tryig to do it all the time. First of all, as I said, according to the rules when they don't declare it, it goes to their default attack. So yes, it happen...

Re: clarification on Mighty Deeds of Arms

How long have you played? We've only played 10 games or so, and our players have avoided stuff like that with Luck and Spellburn. Maybe down the road it will be more common, but so far we don't have any corruption. I mean, to get it you have to roll a 1, then you have like 50% shot on most spells to...

Re: clarification on Mighty Deeds of Arms

When I first saw the rule, I thought that deeds are a tough decision with pros and cons: to risk or not to risk the epic success? Is that foe so dangerous to need a special tactic at the risk to miss it, or and ordinary longsword attack is enough for him so I do not need any esotic action? Should t...

Re: clarification on Mighty Deeds of Arms

That's why there's a die roll. Also, if you don't declare one, you have a default one, so you're not slowing the game down every turn. I haven't noticed any problems like the ones speculated. Most of the time the Dwarf and Fighters in my group fight defensively by default and then when appropriate t...

Re: Thieves'/Halflings Luck and (again!) Mighty Deeds of Arm

I would never let a stat go above 18. Much like levels, with 10th representing a legendary hero, an 18 in a stat is pretty much the pinnacle of whatever your race's abilities are in that stat. (Also, I think it deserves a little discussion that the 3-18 bell curve scale for stats differs between ra...
