Re: DCC and AD&D

I just ran Village of Homlet but from an alternate perspective; most characters were 0-level members of the village, not visitors, and the exceptions were members of a circus that had just come into town, not adventurers. They were caught up in a sort of zombie appocalypse situation as a result of a...

Re: Crawl! articles test-drive - Ability-Based Occupations,

I like the idea of stat based occupation tables; totally random is often funny, but it is easier to get your head around a character who has drifted into a walk of life he or she can actually do. That said, this system would probably not have given us a character like Samwell from Game of Thrones...

Re: mercurial magic

There are a lot of ways for the dice to be cruel to you in DCC, and mercurial magic is one of them. I have to say, at this stage I think it is most fun to just go with it. Maybe it feels like a 'spell killer' to get the rain of frogs, but how about thinking of it as a 'scene maker'?

Re: Atributes for non-human races (?)

This is madness. MADNESS! Careful saying things like that... make sure there is no giant pit behind you beforehand at least. Next you'll tell me that springer spaniels are exactly as strong as rotweilers. Of course I won't. Both of those are things that exist in the real world first and would exist...

Do what you want with your world, but in mine the physical strength of beings that are physiologically similar is in some way related to their size.

Re: Atributes for non-human races (?)

Don't get too carried away with the examples of strong small people. First, humans and hobbits aren't chimpanzees, so the fact that a 3' tall living creature can be stronger than an average adult man is not a good indication of Frodo's bench press. Second, a 110 lbp strong man might have impressive ...

Re: Atributes for non-human races (?)

I just want to avoid the impossible strength 18 hobbit. A 3' tall person weighing 60-80 pounds could never, under any circumstances, be as strong as the biggest, brawniest man you know.

Re: Upcoming rulebooks?

I understand the insatiable hunger for spells and monsters - this has always been part of the appeal of D&D. But if I were running this property I wouldn't put out any new rule books for a good long time. They just produced a classic and it is clearly enough for a long run of rich play. And, ask...

Re: I haven't been this excited about an RPG since 2005.

Agreed. This is the freshest core roleplaying game product to be published in a long time. WFRP is a good point of comparison. I would have to take a trip in the way back machine to come up with another game I thought was similarly strong right out of the box. There are gobs of OSR style games out t...

This is a great idea. I'll give some thought to the sorts of lists I might want to have access to. Something appropriate to an Elric of Melnibone campaign? A Hyborian backgrounds list?

Re: Two questions regarding deeds of arms

That's right; paying a penalty of the deed die on the to-hit roll will make it pretty unlikely you would ever attempt deeds, unless you were in a circumstance that required some unusual outcome to win. Also note that if you do it this way your chance of succeeding at a deed won't actually rise much ...

Re: 0-level Party Generator... in French!

I just played with the new crit and fumble tables and dice roller on your site as well; Fantastic! Is there a missing d4 category for the fumble table? I was sure that unarmored characters roll 1d4 on a fumble. Anyway, all incredibly useful for speeding and easing game play. Is it safe to assume th...

Re: Review: Doom of the Savage Kings

I was really pissed when I saw this tucked into a copy of the game at the local store but they wouldn't let me buy it separately. It feels like I'm being punished for having purchased my copy of the book directly from Goodman Games! Anyway, any chance we could buy it directly from goodman games? Ho...

Re: Two questions regarding deeds of arms

Yah, some sort of balance is probably called for here; you don't want to punish the players for dreaming up deeds by having their characters not do any sort of damage. They will quickly figure out they have to play it safe and just deliver bland attacks if they want to put anyone on the ground.

Re: 0-level Party Generator... in French!

I can't comment on the french version, but I really love the english one! It makes a huge difference to have the 'funnel' approach be super easy - just click the button, hit print, and you are playing. And if you haven't generated a RAW original D&D character in a while (most people have never d...

Re: Two questions regarding deeds of arms

Perhaps the reasonable thing to do is simply decide on the fly whether damage should be normal or subdual based on the intent of the deed. If you try to blind someone with an axe, that is obviously normal damage; if you attempt the same thing by throwing sand in their face, that is obviously subdual...

Re: Atributes for non-human races (?)

I like the numbers you suggest, but will apply them to attribute modifiers rather than attributes. They are more meaningful that way (I like differences among characters to be a bit more exagerated than core D&D generally supports).

Atributes for non-human races (?)

As far as I can tell, there are no attribute adjustments for non human races. Perhaps the thought here is that any differences in capability between races is encapsulated in their racial class abilities? If so, there would seem to be some odd inconsistencies. It is just as likely for a hobbit to hav...

"recovering the body"

The rules for death on p. 93 specify that if you come to the body of a fallen comrad who has officially died (reached 0 HP and failed to be healed for more rounds than their level), they can attempt a Luck save to actually be alive but badly hurt. That's cool; any sword and sorcery campaign should o...

Two questions regarding deeds of arms

I have two questions regarding deeds of arms: (1) As far as I can tell, there is no penalty for failing to perform a deed; i.e., if your deed die does not score a natural 3, you still succeed or fail at your attack as if no deed was attempted. Is this right? If so, doesn't it mean a warrior should A...
