Re: Necromancer: Wizard or Cleric?

Heck, Gandalf! He lays on hands. That being said, he isn't actually a wizard . . . .

So maybe not the best example. But he claims to be a wizard and he does heal people.

Re: New Judge starting a level 0 game question

Regarding whether to have people create new level 0s or to jump to level 1, I would say have them start with 0s. I think it is a big part of the experience. I think DCC is perfect for multi-level play. For example, in the current arc I am running online, I'm having the group round out their 1 or 2 s...

Re: Curious about the DCC RPG crowd...

1992 I think. A friend of mine showed me a book on the bus and it captivated me. I have absolutely no idea what book it was, but I went out and bought the 2nd edition books right away (it was definitely not them).

That is certainly how I read it.

I think in fact that it specifically says that the lucky roll never changes is evidence that other modifiers do change.

Re: Please review my Monk class

As TheNobleDrake said, my intent is for the following to be constructive criticism. Hit Points: d8 HD seems reasonable if you reduce the power of some of the other abilities. Alignment: Not sure why there should be an alignment restriction honestly. Weapon training: Seems fine I guess. Armor: I thin...

Re: Complexity Level of DCC

Granted the list isn't perfect, and I assumed people play ad&d like we do - make stuff up for the most part. On thinking, it's the magic rules that give me pause for thought, everything else seems to be relatively straight forward. And chart heavy; yes, but that too can be resolved. It's not re...

Re: Goblinoid & Troglodyte alignment

I don't understand the problem Goblins and Troglodytes can be lawful. They will use order and discipline to wipe the stinky humans off the face of the planet. Unlike those stupid orcs who will attempt the same thing in a disorderly, undisciplined manner. (Pathetic creatures, right?) How is that har...

Also bear in mind you have to survive quite a few levels before it will even be especially restrictive.

Re: Marching order

I actually have them work out a detailed march order and then work from there. Unless players note otherwise I assume as characters die the others fill up the ranks. In regards to the Portal Under the Stars and the door, how I handle that is that it is the front row unless players specify for exampl...

Re: Goblinoid & Troglodyte alignment

An interesting facet is that lawful means opposed to outsider influence, chaotic means willing to deal with outside forces. So perhaps goblinoids, while probably in opposition to humans, are on the side of mortals against influence from Outside. Goblinoids are probably "evil" but are inde...

Re: Known spells - a minimum or a maximum?

Thanks for clarifying! The explanation you gave right there is perfect and could go right in the book. Part of what it made it initially confusing to me is undoubtedly the D&D background of having access to dozens of spells potentially. I confess to having not read Vance or Shea, but while think...

Re: Known spells - a minimum or a maximum?

I think that's what you start with but you can find more through adventure. Of course, the impression I get is that it is not so simple as sharing spellbooks between mages, as each spell is mercurially attuned to each magician, so some sorta something has to go down... quests for ex. I've started l...

Re: Known spells - a minimum or a maximum?

I take it as the number you know and can cast in a day. However, you could have a grimoire with 10 spells in it. In order to memorize one, you have to get rid of one in your memory. Interesting! That possibility had not occurred to me. That combined with the requirement that learning a spell takes ...

Re: Can Clerics only know 4 spells or can pick 4 every morni

My reading is that they pick 'em and know 'em - except that there can be limits to what they can pick based on their deity, but that is up for you to determine. They do not need to find sources of magical knowledge as their deity grants their spells directly. just once or every day? An option could...

Re: Known spells - a minimum or a maximum?

My reading assumed that the spells known was a maximum. But, I don't have proof. Good question. -Berc It was my initial assumption as well - it is certainly the most natural reading. I got a little confused by the spells known as well... especially because of patron bond, invoke patron, and patron ...

Problem is that it's vague. For example 'Cutting off the opponent's hand'. Is that 3+, 4+, 5+, 6+ or 7+? 'Taking the rider out of his saddle with well aimed blow' Is that 3+, 4+, 5+, 6+ or 7+? And so on. Perhaps not the best of examples, but I hope it gets my point across. I might rule these like s...

Known spells - a minimum or a maximum?

I wasn't sure if this should go in rules or magic, so I picked magic! Is the number of known spells intended to be a minimum or a maximum? There is some evidence for each stance. My first read through I thought it was a maximum, but then I found the following two items: on p. 126: "If your char...

In table 1-1, characters with 18 intelligence can cast 6th level spells.

Unless of course this is foreshadowing . . . .
