Re: Game feels incomplete

There's quite a few things which aren't really explained - most of this is fine if you have DCC, but it makes things a bit tougher in an independent rpg. For example: What are the abilities used for? There is no description of them, skill checks, or ability checks, as was done in DCC. What is a dice...

Re: Boxed Set Release?

Just curious if there's anything new on a rough ETA on the Lankhmar Boxed Set? I did a little googling on Google+ and the latest news I could find is Michael Curtis' update. Finally got around to checking out the Goodman Games Lankhmar books and now I want more... :-) It's totally OK if Michael resp...

Manly Wade Wellman's Silver John

I was impressed by the setting in The Chained Coffin so went on a search for some of Wellman's Silver John stories. It was a bit harder than I'd anticipated - not much of his work is in-print and very little of it is available digitally. I was able to obtain The Old Gods Waken first. I did a review ...

Greatest line heard in last night's DCC game

We're working our way through the funnel. Second session, probably one more to go. Each one has been a blood-bath. After a character is frozen to death, failing to avoid the cursed idol's freeze ray while trying to pry out a gem a player says - "Do we have to level up at the end of this?"....

Re: PSG: The Crawler's Companion Kickstarter is live!

Played with the beta apk a bit. Works fine on the Kindle Fire and Galaxy Nexus (ICS). This really deserves its Kickstarter to succeed - it's making my life so much easier. I pitched it in my blog today.

Re: Appendix N suggestions

For Andre Norton I'd suggest Witch World . Nice interplanar travel, magic, interesting societies. For HP Lovecraft... hmm with just one my favorite short story is "The Shadow over Innsmouth" - nice creepy community, good inspiration for D&D. Frederic Brown... "Arena" is what ...

Starting a new Google Hangouts Game Mondays

With folks from my gaming group moving, both in-state and out-of-state (and out of country) we've been using Skype and Fantasy Grounds for a lot of gaming. With a lot of new babies we've been having trouble making quorum of late and we're therefore looking to expand the group and kickoff a new campa...

Long-Term DCC Play

So his might be a tough question to answer, given DCC is barely out yet... :-) In any case, one comment I've seen in a lot of blogs is a thought that DCC might not be suitable for long-term play. I wasn't involved with the playtest so I myself lack the context on this. But I am curious what others t...

The Mathematics of Magic

I've been addressing the gaps in my reading of Appendix N. I recently finished reading "The Roaring Trumpet", the opening novella of The Mathematics of Magic by L. Sprauge de Camp and Fletcher Pratt. Having never read it and knowing almost nothing about it it made for an enjoyable read, bo...

Re: Modern Heroes

Andre Norton'sWitch World is a good example of a modern hero crossing worlds. Stephen King's Dark Tower series has something similar - more funnel-like actually considering some don't survive the experience and the characters are often zero-level-ish.

Deed Dice Bonus - does d10+2 always succeed?

At high levels a warrior's deed die increases to include a bonus. For example at 8th level a warrior gets d10+2 for his deed die. Does this mean that for difficulty 3 might deeds an 8th level warrior is guaranteed to succeed, given he will get at least a 3 for his might deed roll (assuming a hit)? O...

Re: Books that should be in Appendix N

For my own "personal Appendix N" a big inspiration for me was Stephen King's The Gunslinger . Although clearly far too late (not widely available until the later 80s) to be an inspiration for D&D it helped inform my own gaming, especially as someone who had familiarity with only a smal...

Elf starting spells

Been absorbing the release pdf - really has my brain thinking of adventure ideas. One thing I've been puzzling over is the starting spells given to an elf. They get patron bond and invoke patron plus three more. This seems out of balance with the poor wizard who gets four total and lacks most of the...
