Re: Introductions Thread - Join the Band!
Howdy folks, I'm Rod (although I usually stick to Bercilak on the 'net). I live in Greensboro, NC where I teach writing. I started RPing when I was about 7 with an older kid who lived next door. We played some weird mash-up of games that included characters from Magic Realm and monsters from the 1e ...

Halfling Lucky Charms
When halflings burn luck on behalf of an ally, does the ally get +2 per point spent, or +1?

Re: Limits to Spell Burn?
I agree with the folks that don't see this ideas as troubling. But, if it does bug you that wizards can supercharge spells during breaks int he campaign, you could always houserule that any spellburn over a certain amount automatically involves permanent score loss from the shock. Say 1 point for ev...

Re: Can Clerics only know 4 spells or can pick 4 every morni
I'm planning on being literal and saying that it's the number of spells they know. My reasoning: -The chart says "spells known" -Much of a cleric's power comes from the other ways they can manifest divine power, so they don't need as much versatility in spell selection -The rules talk abou...

Missing section on Patron Bond
This was mentioned in the "stomp the typo" thread, but I thought I'd ask what anyone else is doing to fill in the gap on the Patron Bond spell, where the table skips over the 24-27 spell effects.

Re: Known spells - a minimum or a maximum?
My reading assumed that the spells known was a maximum. But, I don't have proof. Good question.

Appendix N suggestions
Most of my fantasy reading came after Appendix N was codified. So, I read the things that were still popular in the 1980s--Amber, Fafhrd and Mouser, Moorcock, Lovecraft, but missed out on a lot of the earlier stuff. I'm currently (slowly) working my way through the works of the Appendix, but I'm not...

Re: First session funnel
In regards to the wizard pool, did any of the characters have an Int that would make for a "passable" wizard? I have tried to get my players out of the habit of assuming every character has to be optimized for the class. No one wants to play a totally gimpy wizard, but an "okay"...

First session funnel
My group played our first game tonight. 10 of 18 characters survived the Portal funnel. I ran the game as everyone started in Saxon England as humans, and the portal moved while the party was inside. In the dungeon, the demi-humans started to have manifestations of their new forms, but it wasn't unt...

Re: Critical Successes and Fumbles
Not sure if this rule applies to all cases, but page 79 says that character may roll dice other than d20s to attack (multiple attacks or two-weapon fighting), but "A critical hit still requires a result of a natural 20 or the character's threat range . . . secondary dice results do not score cr...

Re: The pre-order shipments have left the printer!
Just got my standard edition copy in Greensboro, NC about 5 minutes ago. That's a brick of a book. I don't know what I thought 400+ pages would look like, but something that could replace a house cornerstone wasn't it! But it sure looks nice.

Question about 0-level weapon training
I'm a little confused about weapon training and zero-level characters. Here's what the rules say (page 24): "All 0-level characters are trained in the one weapon they possess from their former occupation. If a 0-level character handles multiple weapons over his career, he is considered trained ...

Re: Books that should be in Appendix N
I'm not sure that I agree with Finarvyn about the Hall of Fame aspect of Appendix N. Many of the books on the list were also written in the early '70s and hardly represent books with staying power. (I'd hazard that a number of the books are only read because of Appendix N now.) I like to think of th...
