Re: Ability checks and difficulty levels

I am happy to announce the DC ahead of time. Most of the time, I use the standard DC 5/10/15/20 framework, with occupations/classes roll 1d10 if they don't fit the type of action the check is calling for. Sometimes I will bump that up the dice chain, and if a character shows a particular talent for ...

Re: That dice chain

Another vote for the dice chain. The utility of this mechanic cannot be underestimated. The more you use it, the easier it becomes, and also the more powerful a tool. PCs starving in the wilderness? Use the dice chain on their rolls, and suddenly they care about food! Freezing to death? Once the dic...

For the Love of Gnomes!

If you go way back to 2017, Yves Larochelle introduced a Gnome class in Crawl! Fanzine #6. Now, years later, there is an adventure which brings this class to your gaming table! In addition, there are rules for Faerie Animals (first introduced in Creeping Beauties of the Wood) from the backwater bayo...

Re: Lack of a cleric spell

In the scheme of the world. Why would anyone worship a god? they get nothing out of it. Clerics get their class powers, duh. but spreading the faith... why would anyone worship. In many cases, for the same reason people do IRL....a feeling of connection to something larger, hopes for the afterlife,...

Re: DCC Halfling only class that's worse than Basic D&D source

By RAW, a Halfling fighting with two weapons automatically hits and crits on a 16. Armor Class be damned! But what about an unnatural 16? For example, my halfling with +2 STR rolls a 14, and gets +2, for a total of 16. I call that a crit if it hits, but not an auto-hit. That's how I got such a high...

Does anyone have a recommendation for a product that gives me maps of a city as well as descriptions of the buildings and such?
Does the Lankhmar product by Goodman Games provide that?
Lankhmar has a fantastic map by Mr. Doug Kovacs.

Re: Lotus Stare

(1) Yes.

(2) It depends on the judge, but I would say that if it can see, has eyes, and is not immune to mind-affecting, it can be affected. That last might disqualify a vampire, if it gains that immunity as an un-dead creature.

Re: Thief Action Dice

Some Judges, including some I have experienced personally, will not allow you to use backstab with another character acting as a distraction. Or say... don't let you "backstab" with a ranged weapon, even though it is technically allowed by the rules. Marzio and Jim are right to ridicule those judge...

Re: Thief Action Dice

Now I'm interested in the discussion about how often the thief can use backstab. What are the opposing views? "When attacking a target from behind or when the target is otherwise unaware". Whenever this happens, the backstab happens. A good Thief/Warrior duo has the warrior use her Deed to set up t...

Re: Thief Action Dice

Please correct me if I'm misinterpreting this in the DCC core book, in the Thief class section, under 'Ability Dice', it states that Ability Dice can be used for attacks and Skill Checks. No other class has this. Does this mean that Thieves can use a D20(if that is their ability die) to make any an...

Re: Goblinoid alignment

Got it, thanks for answering I will ask a slightly different question: does a cleric of a chaotic god have a goblin as a heretical creature? By RAW, that cleric could attempt to Turn the Unholy on that goblin....or the average dwarf or halfling! Likewise, a Lawful cleric can Turn the Unholy on the ...

Another thing I would consider: Patron bond is for when the PC wants to get the patron's attention and prove their worth to the patron.

If a patron wants to select you, there is no need for a spell. Just roll or determine the spell result however you like.

"Luck can be restored in the same way that a man normally gains good or bad luck – by appealing to the gods. Great acts of courage in defense of one’s deity may earn a boon, just as acts in opposition to a devil may earn a curse." IOW, if your Luck is getting low, you may wish to appeal to the gods ...

If you have access to DCC Lankhmar, there are rules for acting as the agent of a patron. These might be adapted to any campaign.
