Re: The pre-order shipments have left the printer!
Portland reporting... Both of my copies showed up on my birthday yesterday, and the gold cover edition went straight into plastic and onto the collection shelf. I can't wait 'til the next game session and I can drop my regular copy out onto the table instead of the crappy printo...

Re: DCC RPG Arrival!
To plant the 30 veggie seedlings, or to read my tome? Read the tome, of course. Shame on you for even asking! :D I got mine today as well. A day-before-birthday present. My precious! It's so freakin' huge! I mean, it's one thing to read a PDF or flip through a 3-ring notebook with a single-sided co...

Re: DCC Alignment question
What about Tom Bombadil? He has the power to unmake the ring, yet he chooses not to? That's pretty decidedly neutral. Or most of the elves, dwarves, and men, who, having cares of their own, choose not to get involved. Or the hillmen, who are tricked by Saruman into believing that the Rohirrim are m...

Re: DCC Alignment question
Sounds like you prefer to analyze literature in greater depth than I. Probably true. When my youngest was watching Dora the Explorer, I couldn't avoid analysing the nature of her universe (i.e., the route from point A to B is always changing, even if it is a familiar route, such as between your fri...

Re: DCC Alignment question
As an obvious example of how the books and movies are dis similar, in the books Saruman is working for himself, and begins by attempting to play both sides in hopes of gaining the One Ring. Evil is not monolithic. Nor does destroying the Ring end evil forever. The changes to Faramir, making Aragorn ...

Re: DCC is DDNext
Exactly. When the editorial decision comes down the pike to, say, "design a game that pushes the use of miniatures, so that we can sell our pre-painted plastic minis... hey! and maybe some battle maps, too!" then the initial observation that combat takes to long in 3e suddenly ends in even...

Re: DCC is DDNext
Well said, DimitriX. The default is not "We'll pay for any crap you might care to put out just to say we've tried it" but, rather, "If you want our money, you must give us reason to spend it." Goodman Games has given me that reason, time and again. Even when I was playing 3e, the...

Re: Representin', as the younger hip kids say.
I, for one, would LOVE to see Into the Wilds done as PF, with all the errata/corrections included and the maps as accurate as possible....and maybe, if Harley were up for it, even a little Easter Egg bonus area. That adventure "broke my cherry" re: DMing, and holds a special place in my h...

Re: Long-Term DCC Play
Based on my reading of RPG forums, long term campaigning has less to do with the game system and more to do with player commitment and group stability. Do you think that those things have nothing to do with the system used? Anecdotally, I played 1e continuously from about 1980 to the release of 2e,...

Re: DCC Alignment question
LotR more complex (add in Saruman in the middle but working both ends) but either system could work well for a Middle-earth campaign. I don't see LotR as anything resembling complex. It's almost black and white in simplicity. Saruman is a small special case because he was usurped by Sauran. He was ...

Re: Critical Successes and Fumbles
That's correct. If you take more than one action (where you have to roll more than one die), or you do something that you are not as good at (so as to take a die type penalty), you are more apt to have a mishap.dunbruha wrote:What about fumbles? The chances for those also increases with a smaller die.

Re: DCC is DDNext
Frankly, although I hope my impression is wrong, nothing I have seen about D&D Next makes me interested, let alone excited. Even calling it "D&D Next" screams "New Coke". DCC is not D&D Next. D&D Next leaves me feeling blah about it. DCC has me excited. It has me ...

Call me ignorant (you wont be the first or last) but you keep refering to player agency (you mentioned it in another thread).I just want to know what your definition of it is. I'm not trying to pick a fight, I seriously find myself in the dark on this. Is it players taking more of an active role in...

Re: Critical Successes and Fumbles
the Judge trumps the rules. Spot on sir! I must keep that in mind when people discuss rules on this site. Officially RC is right however. I know that WOtC-D&D makes use of "Rule 0", but it always seemed an anaemic way to go about it to me. Perhaps this is because so much of player age...

Re: Critical Successes and Fumbles
1 is always a miss; warriors and dwarves (only) can burn Luck to prevent it from being a fumble. The book says: A higher-level character with multiple attacks may roll an action die other than 1d20. Similarly, a character attacking with two weapons may roll a die other than 1d20. A critical hit stil...

Re: Long-Term DCC Play
I always appreciate your critiques, Raven. They are well reasoned, and best of all, constructive. Thanks. Like I said, going through the core book, I can see how many of my concerns from the Beta were addressed. That's a great thing. Due to the forums, I've got a spell and patron template; I recomm...

Re: Long-Term DCC Play
Yes, the car needs gas to run. Now, about your dog..... Imagine that a Judge wishes to create a new campaign world. Naturally, he is interested in creating Patrons that relate to that campaign world. How much work must he do to create a patron, and how much play will he get out of that work? I.e., t...

Re: Long-Term DCC Play
Again, though, this doesn't answer the concerns raised. Actually, it does to a certain extent. The point that Joseph was making is that any campaign can be long or short if the players play smart or dumb. Again, I disagree. Joseph's point is valid, to some extent, but there are two sides of the tab...

Re: Long-Term DCC Play
Play smart and you'll end up with a campaign! Charge into every room expecting a balanced encounter and the campaign will end real fast. :) BINGO! All players cry fowl to the DM because they cant kill that Mummy at 2nd level (run past him dummies)! Again, though, this doesn't answer the concerns ra...

Re: Long-Term DCC Play
Did Conan take part in a campaign or did he do a series of adventures which made him into a king? I guess it depends on the player. Mine don't want to change the world(myself included) we just like to kill and loot and maybe talk to (harass) some NPCs, build a stronghold etc. We are refreshingly sh...

Re: Zocchi Dice Buyer's Guide
The unusual dice are hard to come by (here in Toronto, at least), and I want to make sure that interested parties can roll the bones in some way, shape, or form when I'm running the game. I think the owner of Sci-Fi world has a distributor, but you'd have to make a special request for odd dice. I a...

Re: Long-Term DCC Play
I'm not sure I understand this complaint. Is it because there is a real chance of death in a campaign? Nobody likes losing a character to a bad dice roll, but if there is no risk then why even bother? Sometimes you succeed and sometimes you fail. More importantly, how is finishing a campaign any di...

Re: Long-Term DCC Play
As one who has considered problems with long-term campaigns in DCC RPG (from the Beta), I am not basing this on the levels, but on the adventure pattern implied by the books (which seems to support episodic play as written). One of the concerns I had is how the megadungeon model works with the syste...
