An interesting PBF Phenomenon - Threeliloquy
Something I'm observing in a playtest via Play-By-Forum. Since each character controls three characters (in this particular playtest anyway), I'm finding that the players will often have conversations amongst themselves. Witness: Caractacus eyes Pontius: "That's better. But don't think we're no...

Re: Dice...
That's what will draw in new players. I don't know if this is what you meant, but DCCRPG is not designed to draw new players to the RPG hobby. It's a niche inside niche product, not a market leader. And that's a totally cool design intent. If you're only looking to sell to a tiny percentage of game...

Also, take a look at Paizo. The core PFRPG book is $50 US for the printed version. Add to that $40 for the Bestiary, $40 US for the Advanced Players Guide, and $40 US for the Gamemastery Guide. Assuming you just buy the barebones that you need to run the game (Core + Bestiary) that is $90 US that y...

I also think that wavemotion's contention that the Zocchi dice will turn off new gamers is very suspect. If asking newcomers to buy specialized equipment for the game was a turn off, then no one would buy RPG's, video games, paintball equipment, or equipment for any specialized gaming activity. The...

Re: what game is most like the DCC RPG?
For me, it feels most like 3.x tweaked with a 0e feel. The basic mechanics (d20 roll high, ascending AC, skill checks vs DC, REF/FORT/WIL saves) all feel 3.x-ish. The tables, classes and off-balanced feel and more emphasis on creative player/DMs feels more like 0e. The funky dice and spellburn give ...

Re: Tricks & Tips for Judges
Roll in the Open : I’m a *huge* proponent of cheating for drama's sake, but Role in the Open was Joseph's mantra from the first days of the DCC RPG, and it works. For monster attacks and damage I roll out in the open so that everyone knows what is on the line, and that you're not going to fudge for...

Re: Dice: generating "Zocchi results" using "normal" polyhed
Here's another interesting take on the dice situation. If you've played Traveller, then you remember the d66, or rolling two six-sided dice reading the first result as 10's and the second as 1's. The d66 equals to a d36, in which on any other roll you have 36 possible combinations (6 times 6.) See ...

Luck Roll "always modifies..."
The beta rules state: This “lucky roll” is always modified by the character’s Luck score (for good or bad) in ... But the lucky roll table (1-2) has these: 29 Birdsong: Number of languages 30 Wild child: Speed (each +1 = +5’ speed) It's possible languages could be reduced to zero - which might actual...

Re: Zocchi DIce Poll
My vote is 'Already Bought Some' and if I hadn't, I'd have chosen 'Would buy at (within reason) whatever cost'. Neither vote I'd have given, however, tells the story of why I think they are bad ideas for sales of the game (assuming they are not included in the box with the rules) and for growing the...

3.5 is alive and well. It's just been renamed to Pathfinder and appears to be outpacing 4e in the last year (other than the one quarter where Essentials was released).docplutonium wrote:Now that 3.5 has been murdered in it's sleep by 4.0.

Re: Would you use the DCC RPG for long term campaign play ?
The player may be playing a hero. But the character doesn't see him or herself or a hero. I think that is the difference in DCC--you play the character based on who he is not as a mythical archetype hero. The heroics follow organically and naturally from actual game play not player direction or bac...

Re: Would you use the DCC RPG for long term campaign play ?
As currently constituted? No. It's a fun one-shot - just like most of the great DCC modules of the past. Main reason: first page states it clearly enough... "You are not a hero". I want a classic Heroes Journey (Campbell, The Hero with a Thousand Faces (c) 1949) in my long-term play. I pla...

Thanks! I see it now under the Stamina description that it is a minimum 1hp per level.

Starting Characters with 0 hp?
We just had someone roll 1d4=2 and have a Stamina "bonus" of -2... do they die in character creation or should they be given 1hp?

Ah! Okay... that works. It's a little odd to be crushed by a boulder for 20 points of damage with only 1 remaining and be in the same bleed-out condition as getting a paper-cut under the same circumstances but I can deal with that.

Re: Non-prof penalty
We have all these fancy dice now, can we just make non-proficient weapon attacks a d16 instead of a d20? I'm guessing that would shift a critical hit from 1 in 20 to 1 in 16. Giving a non-proficient weapon attack a higher critical percentage seems odd. I guess they could say a non-proficient weapon...

Ah! Right! Thanks - coffee hadn't kicked in yet.GnomeBoy wrote:Damage = 1, 1, 2 or 3
There's a higher chance of doing 1 point of damage, thus a relatively lower chance of a 2 or a 3.

Critical Hits with dice other than d20
I'm sure someone must have asked this but I'm struggling to find it... Apologies if this is a repeat. Let's take, for example, two weapon attacks. If your Agility is 12 you get two attacks at d16 and d14 and can only crit on the primary "on a 20". Does that mean that a d16 will only crit i...

Firstly, the rule is that you're dead at ZERO hit points. No -1 hit points here! You might have misinterpreted my question. My question was ... is Zero dead and potentially recoverable and -1 dead-dead (non-recoverable)? Or is 0, -1, -2, -100 all the same level of dead (i.e. can potentially be reco...

Re: Beta Rules Bleed Out
I have an additional Bleed Out question... in the Beta Rules it seems to specifically say "reaches 0 hit points". I read that to mean 0 exactly (and that -1 or below was dead-dead). Or do they really mean 0 or fewer = bleeding out?

1d4-1 and Minimum Damage 1
In the Beta Rules it says: A successful attack always inflicts a minimum of 1 point of damage, even if the attacker has a negative Strength modifier. In the Starter Adventure there is a creature with damage 1d4-1. Assuming the quote above applies to creatures as well as characters, I assume that means...

Gygax was the one who invented the wimpy wizard as glass cannon - Vance, Leiber, Howard, and Moorcock had no such notions. It makes the class both playable with other classes and quite interesting. If you want a sturdy wizard with infinite spells - 4e is a better fit. Novels are not RPGs. Plot devi...

Re: Dice...
It's a design feature. Why did OD&D decide to use those strange "polyhedral" dice instead of just six-siders? Using a smaller die type limits the number range more. It helped that they actually provided a full set with every basic set you bought! Well, I started playing OD&D years...
