Re: Types of magic in fantasy.

Magic and its use in the world is a major flavour factor in any fantasy campaign. I have always seen magic as inherently neutral. It's a tool, like a sword or a length of rope. I agree with the view that it should be the wizards choice to deal with dark powers in exchange for power and the risk of c...

Re: A Solution for all that Burning...?

I like it :) As a DM, I like to keep an eye on my players sheets anyway, because to quote House MD, "everybody lies" but perhaps one could have a seperate area to note 'blanket modifiers' such as -2 to all physical or mental actions etc, to help remind players? In my game, I will likely have ...

Re: Surprise?

 Real Homer Simpson moment there for me: I'm still so brainwashed by 3.5 thinking that I overlooked the obvious.
It doesn't NEED a mechanic, you can use Common Sense!

Surprise?

In the Combat Chapter, under Overview, it states "• Before the first round, the judge rolls for surprise."

Can anyone tell me what the mechanic is for surprise in DCCRPG, or is it (wait for it...) a surprise?!
I can't find any other mention of it in the Beta rules.

Re: New to DCC RPG

. In an attempt to cover , clarify , and codify everything with rules, battles seem to take a lot longer, and the role playing aspect of the game has really taken a back seat. Hi Stonebreaker. Welcome to the forum :) I agree about the nature of the game these days. As a friend said today "the game ...

Re: BETA: What has been learned?

That solves the ever inflating DC issue found in 3e/4e. And it eliminates the needs for the concept of skills. (No skills! No skills! No skills!) I'm confused. (it happens easily, bear with me) If there are no skills, how does a character get better at something he does session after session? Take ...

I agree. This makes sense to me and seems balanced. Thanks :)

MDoA for other classes?

I love the rules for the Mighty Deeds of Arms, but I find myself wondering why the other classes shouldn't be allowed to use them? The MDoA encourages Warriors and Dwarves to be more creative in combat, but what happens when a cleric or a thief wants to shove an opponent through a door? (for example...

Re: Bards, Warlords and Burning Personality.

Burning personality does seem interesting. Agreed. And it opens up some interesting design options. What if a person could burn strength in order to accomplish some heroic strength action like lifting a metal grate? Or burn Agility to make a walk across a tightrope. Great idea! I think this makes f...

Re: Would you use the DCC RPG for long term campaign play ?

Yes, I'd use DCC RPG for long-term play. Nothing in the rule that I can see needs to have changes; I would, however, come up with houserules on how to reduce things like corruption, ability loss, etc., most like with adventures in their own right to do so. I'm interested in DCC RPG precisely for th...

Re: Luck

I've seen other games with similar stats (not exactly, but comparable) and one of the ways I liked handling it was to give the players a boost for burning in advance. So, for example, if you burn Luck prior to rolling, each point equals a +2. If you burn AFTER, each point equals a +1. I don't know,...

Re: Level Cap

I was chatting to a fellow Old Schooler today and he mentioned that the OD&D basic book only went to level 9, which was your name level and when characters got to build keeps and such.
If old school flavour is one of your goals, then maybe 9 levels would be better than 10 in the core book?

Dice suggestion

I've noticed several complaints on the boards about the d5 and d7 not giving very even results. Browsing the net, i found the following pics and wondered if this design would work better? http://www.bearcubmachine.com/dicepics.html (Sorry - I couldn't figure out how to post the picture directly) Fro...

Re: DCC RPG for Castle Whiterock

You'd have a lot of 'on the fly' conversion work to do, especially between now and November, but if you're up for that, I'd say give it a go! I'm only familiar with the first few levels of CW at all, so the thing that pops into my head is: "Why would Level-Zero characters try to thwart the slavers....

Re: Level Cap

I think level 10 works well for the core book. Personally I would like to see some sort of expert level book dealing with levels 11 and beyond. To me it should be a very different game, dealing mostly with planar politics, gods, demons etc. I remember there being a picture of a character undergoing ...

Re: Posting Castle Whiterock Conversions to Pathfinder

I threw out XP in my game long ago. I found that XP either forced characters to fight monsters instead of considering alternate actions, forced me to give them gold so that they could also get XP, forced them to try meaningless spells or picking pockets just to get XP, and so on. Maybe it was just ...

DCC RPG for Castle Whiterock

Hi I have been elected by our group to run Castle Whiterock as our next campaign in a few months when our current 2 year campaign ends. I have been battling to decide what ruleset to use though. I considered C&C for its old school feel, but the group is currently still using 3.5 and are keen to try ...

Re: Hit points: What are they?

I agree that hit points should reflect more of the luck, scrapes and bruises than actual physical damage. Personally, I love the idea of critical hits doing actual physical harm and having lasting effects. The problem that arises, however, is that one is then tempted to have two seperate hit point t...
