Problems with PC/NPC interactions often come from what I call Parallel/Perpendicular Syndrome - which means that the goals of the PCs tend to either completely parallel those of the NPCs (usually allies) or run totally contrary to the NPCs (usually villains). Things get more interesting when you put...

Somebody get the shotgun, because there's a zombie lurking in here .... :) Wow. Haven't given this one much thought in the intervening years since I first posted this (as you can see, other priorities took place over the d20 conversion of this game). But I did read through Cybrog Commando a few time...

Basic D&D Rulebook by Tom Moldvay?? Never heard of that... Heretic!!!!!! :P :) It predates the "red" boxed set by a few printings - it features fantastic cover art by Erol Otus, and was indeed written by the late Tom Moldvay. I think it's probably the best version of the D&D Basic...

Really, really good stuff here. I think that perhaps the most important thing to note here is that while we all share similar ideas as to what makes a "classic", there's no set formula for doing so. It's not like throwing elements A, B, C, and D into a module guarantees that you have a cla...

How much do the adventures that you write evolve, going from your initial concept to your final draft? Obviously, the basic concept from the approved pitch stays the same - but do you find yourself adding in new stuff and taking things in different directions as you write and playtest, or do things ...

Devil in the Mists at GenCon

Out of mild curiosity, is anyone on these boards registered to play in "Devil in the Mists" on Saturday at GenCon? If so, I'm looking forward to killing your charact- um, I mean, meeting you in person. And be forewarned if you've read it or played it before - I made a few tweaks ...

Obligatory ***Spoiler Alert*** ... Hmm ... there's an encounter with the derro in "Dreaming Caverns" that I like a lot, mostly because it represents my favorite sort of encounter - one that requires some thought, and a little planning. Impatient players - or oblivious ones - find themselve...

Howdy! I'm just following Jay Little's lead here - since Joseph created this Adventure Design forum to talk about the ins and outs of writing adventures and other sorts of gaming material, I thought I'd throw out the invite to talk about the things I've written, as well as general topics that might ...

I'm no expert on the turn around time for products to go to the printer and come back but four months seems like a long time. I want it now!!! Here's my understanding of the situation, at least based on how the DCC World boxed set worked last year (which was the same - limited GenCon release, then ...

I love how the cover colors of the four booklets match the colors of the old D&D boxed sets: Basic, Expert, Campaign and Masters. What a great homage! Wow. I have been playing a long time. I read "... old D&D boxed sets" above and thought "Old? But those are the *new* ones. T...

Cool stuff, 'Wiser. As always, glad you're enjoying it so far. Also glad you used Batu like that - she was always meant to be a flexible encounter, meaning you can play her as a straight-up combat encounter, or something more like you did as a role-playing encounter. I like trying to put a few of th...

Hello Arakor - and welcome to the boards! In general, the DCC GenCon tournament adventures are released as modules the year after they get played at GenCon. Right now, there's two that are available - "Crypt of the Devil-Lich" and "Vault of the Dragon Kings" - and one that's fort...

Hmm ... maybe "The Four Doctors" would be a good one-shot for a con. Gotta see if I can find my original notes for it.

Ken - The short answer to your question is absolutely yes. Temporality, IMHO, is a perfect fit for a Who d20 game. Someday, I'd love to run a one-shot using Temporality called "The Four Doctors" where players take on the roles of the Tennant/Davison/Tom Baker/Troughton Doctors ... :) I sta...

I hope whiterock is not like Undermountain... it would definitely keep me from buying it. From the page count though, it sounds like Castle Whiterock will be a fully fleshed out megadungeon much like Rappan Athuk. I can only hope... Don't worry, Rath. Don't worry at all. From what I've seen of it, ...

I'd highly recommend "Into the Wilds", which is for character levels 1-3. It's set in a frontier outpost, on the border between civilization and the wild lands of the unknown. (It's also a very good adventure!) Sounds perfect for a party of low-level characters heading from the cities to t...

Oh, the pyramid console isn't nearly as massive or powerful as WARDYN.

I would use the Generic Computer stats provided in the beginning of Area 3 for the console.
